Vinyl Collective Collector of the Month: Ben Conoley
Posted by virgil under News, Vinyl Collective

Yes, I realize that a month hasn’t even passed since our last Vinyl Collective Collector of the month, but since it had been a while since our first ever Collector of the Month, I thought have 2 in two weeks would not be a big deal.
I am excited to announce Ben Conoley as July’s Collector of the Month. I have gotten to know Ben recently through email as well as his recent interview he conducted with me that should run on Punknews.org soon. One thing that showed through all of our correspondences was that Ben is truly passionate about collecting vinyl. Since launching the Vinyl Collective Message Board, he has been one of its biggest contributors which lead to him becoming one of our moderators. Ben is a very nice guy (I have yet to meet a mean Canadian) and is a great addition to our VC Collectors of the Month.

VC: Your name and the city you live in.
My name is Ben Conoley and I live in Fredericton, New Brunswick on Canada’s beautiful East Coast.
VC: How many records do you own?
I own about 500 records. I used to own about 4,000 CDs but I recently traded them to the local record store for a whole lot of credit
VC: Why do you collect vinyl?
I have been reviewing CDs for a long time and in 2002 I started to turn towards records as a form of music that meant a little more to me. I couldn’t stand by half the CDs on my shelf, but every record I got would be one I was proud to own. Hot Water Music got me into it and from there I’ve been attracted to the art work, the organic nature of a record, and the collectability.
VC: What is your most prized record in your collection?
It’s probably a tie between a test presss of Hot Water Music’s Fuel for the Hate Game and Hot Water Music’s No Division original press on purple (/100). Also, collectability aside, I can’t dismiss Springsteen’s Nebraska - that’s why they call him the Boss.
VC: What release would you like to see come out on vinyl that hasn’t yet been released?
Alkaline Trio’s S/T album as well as the O Pioneers!!!/Saw Wheel split recently released on Team Science - that CD is amazing
VC: What is the most you have spent for a record?
I spent between $80-90 for Alkaline Trio’s Goddamnit. I try to get things the first time around now.
VC: What out of print record would you kill to own?
Alkaline Trio - Sundials.
VC: Your last 5 record that you purchased?
Gaslight Anthem - Sink or Swim
Hot Water Music - No Division
Against Me! - New Wave
Bridge & Tunnel - S/T
Latterman - We Are Still Alive
