Thanks to our buddy, Justin at Underground Communique, we are now carrying Hawthorne Street Records. They are a great label based in Chicago who have put out a number of killer records for Pelican, The Life and Times, Suicide Note, Your Black Star, Bloodlet, and more. If you are a fan of any of the bands on the list, I highly recommend you check out all of their acts.

METALLICA “Ride The Lightning” LP remastered

We just got in the single LP edition of “Kill ‘Em All” so I thought now would be a good time to talk Metallica.

I must say that these Metallica reissues bring me back to my 8th grade year when my folks wouldn’t let me go see the Monsters of Rock tour with Metallica and Guns n Roses. Pretty much everyone at the Suburban Home/Vinyl Collective offices had stories to share when we got these records in. For many years, we used to host a show called the Monsters of Mock and it always happened around Halloween. We would ask locals to play metal cover sets and dress up as the bands they were covering. The shows would be attended by tons of people all dressed up as butt rockers and let me tell you, when you dress the part and you are boozing, you become a different person. The nights always ended with all kinds of debauchery. Justin, who handles mailorder and shipping/receiving, actually performed a full Metallica set during our first Monsters of Mock as that was a highly influential band for them.

I am sure you all have stories as well, but if you don’t already own these records on wax, do yourself a favor and relieve the days before Metallica became the band they became. Also, I have the ability to get some of the other albums as imports, if you are interested in any of these, let me know.

So we not only survived out trip to Salt Lake City, but we had an absolute blast. Only Thunder were kind enough to let me travel with them and to allow us to pick up a bunch of crap from IKEA for our new offices. Here is a quick recap:

  • A 30 pack of PBR on our way to Grand Junction and the Vinyl Collective beer cozies, I guess you can say we tested them out to make sure they did in fact keep beer cold.
  • We collectively made an on the go playlist on Justin’s IPOD which included Portugal the Man, Small Brown Bike, Paula Abdul, Minus the Bear, Shellac, Michael Jackson, The Playing Favorites, Jawbreaker, and much much more.
  • Our good friends at No Coast Sushi took care of Ghost Buffalo and myself and at one point, all of the Sushi Chef’s took me back into their freezer to shotgun a PBR. Man, I hadn’t shotgunned a beer in so long.
  • Both Only Thunder and Ghost Buffalo rocked it, but unfortunately, the attendance was pretty small. I told Ghost Buffalo that I would dance on stage if they played “Bones”. Right when they started playing the song, I got up and did my Elaine dance from Seinfeld.
  • After the the show, the venue had a DJ afterparty where we all rocked it. The moment the DJ played “Ace of Spades”, we were singing along wielding our air guitars and rocking out. So much fun.
  • On the way back to the hotel, we stopped by a gas station where the Beef Jerkey was calling my name.
  • Went to a kick ass breakfast buffet in the morning before heading out to Salt Lake.
  • Made it to Burt’s Tiki Lounge where they were having a BBQ so we rocked burgers, pasta salad, dogs, and more.
  • Started drinking 3.2 beer and 1 ounce shots at Burt’s which is what bars in SLC have to serve. Our crew drank them out of all their PBR and even though we drank over a hundred beers between our crew, none of us got drunk.
  • Only Thunder rocked it and few of the guys from Gaslight Anthem said they absolutely dug their set.
  • Hung out with the Gaslight Anthem dudes who are all super rad. They were not stoked to drive for 24 hours straight after their set to make it to their next show.
  • The Gaslight Anthem totally rocked out. Check out a few of Geoff’s videos he took of their set. I highly recommend this one in particular.
  • Spoke to the Gaslight dudes about the album they just recorded, they are stoked!
  • Said our goodbyes to Burt’s Tiki Lounge which included the promoter and Geoff talking shit to each other (jokingly, but I did not know that at first). The promoter compared Only Thunder to Quicksand and Far, they were stoked.
  • Woke up early the next morning, went to IKEA, got our shit, ate some Swedish Meatballs, and hit the road. It was a long drive, but we made it home.
  • Geoff farted for 10 hours straight, NOT COOL!
  • Pedro at one point grabbed a blanket which happen to have battery acid on it. He was using it as a pillow and after a few minutes, he felt his skin burning. He asked Justin what was on the blanket which Justin answered, “Battery Acid”. Pedro’s skin not only got red, but he started having blisters. I called Poison Control who instructed us to clean the area and to find a shower so he could clean the area further.
  • We made the questionable judgement call to get Thai food in the small town of Rawlins, Wyoming, and it was fantastic.
  • Made it back to the office, unloaded the furniture, and went home.

The trip was an absolute blast, I miss touring with bands. Make sure you visit Geoff’s blog where he posted a ton of photos from the trip. There are links to each of his posts by day, there are so many great photos.

With all the excitement about Teenage Bottlerocket’s latest album, “Warning Device” coming out on wax, and having seen those guys in Denver, it was suggested I write Adeline Records to make sure we would be getting copies of the Bottlerocket split with Broadway Calls. Lorrin over at Adeline has been absolutely amazing about working with us and as of today, we are dealing direct with this incredible label. I must say that I am so stoked as I have always been a big Green Day fan and I still remember when the split with Dillinger Four and Pinhead Gunpowder came out. There are some really great records on Adeline and some of the following titles are really close to being out of print. And now that we are working directly with them, we will be able to offer you much better prices than we had previously been able to.

So there is some good news and there is some bad news. As photographed, the good news is that we got in some copies of the Norma Jean box set and they turned out amazing. The bad news is that the geniuses at GZ (our pressing plant) only shipped us the B color set. The A color set should be here in about 1 week and if there are any of you who are sick of waiting, let us know and we will send you these out. I apologize for the continued mistakes with this release and really can’t wait to get this release behind me. At least they look fantastic. Stay tuned til next week when we will be getting in the rest of the pressing.

I am declaring this Bomb the Music Industry day! Why you ask? Well we just got the ok to get more copies of upcoming Yellow vinyl version of Album Minus Band so we now have more sets of both colors to sell. Asbestos also let me know that in about a month, we will have some copies of the 2nd pressing of “Goodbye Cool World” on Black/Green vinyl. And to top all of that off, we just got in an order from Asian Man and when Justin was checking in the copies of “Get Warmer”, he noticed that the copies were on the pictured Clear w/ Blue Splatter which looks absolutely bad ass. I called up Asian Man and said “What the Hell Bro?” and it looks like they now have copies on this color. We only have 20 right now, but we will have another 100 copies coming in next week! Get them while you can.

So the above list is all of the Bomb the Music Industry releases we either have in stock or will have in stock within the next month. Enjoy the first ever Bomb the Music Industry day by doing something kick ass! Feel free to let us know how you plan to celebrate!

Newman on the road to michigan

Tomorrow afternoon, I will be hitting the road with Only Thunder and Ghost Buffalo. We will be hitting Grand Junction, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah. We hatched this scheme so that we could purchase a few more bookshelves and stuff for our office from IKEA. For some damn reason, IKEA still isn’t in Denver which means I will be making my 3rd trip in less than a year. We hatched up this scheme to do a few shows on the way out to SLC in a manner not unlike Kramer and Newman from Seinfeld when hatching their plan to bring recycled bottles to Michigan for the higher deposit. Hopefully our trip will end better than theirs did!

Before the show at the beautiful Mesa Theater in Grand Junction, we will be visiting our good friends Chris and Josh at No Coast Sushi and will be dragging them out to the show after we eat at their delicious restaurant. We always have a blast at the Mesa and hopefully Andy (from Only Thunder and Suburban Home) won’t fall down a set of stairs like he did during the last Gamits show in GJ. We are really stoked to drag Ghost Buffalo out with us and are bummed that we could not get them on the Salt Lake City which should be an amazing show with Gaslight Anthem. Brian from Gaslight was instrumental in getting us on their show. I am so excited to see Gaslight as they are skipping over Denver to meet up with Tim Barry and the Bouncing Souls in Minneapolis.

So we will be bringing plenty of Vinyl Collective Beer Cozies, a copy of the new LaGrecia recording, and we will remember to buy beer in Colorado so we don’t have to drink 3.2 beer which is all Salt Lake seems to have.

So if you live in Grand Junction or Salt Lake City, please come to the show and please say hi. It is always great to meet our friends through music in towns where we don’t know a lot of folks. And expect a few good stories early next week.

Saturday, April 26th at the Mesa Theater in Grand Junction, Ghost Buffalo and Only Thunder

Sunday, April 27th at Burt’s Tiki Lounge in Salt Lake City, The Gaslight Anthem and Only Thunder
