CORY BRANAN LIVE AT THE HI-DIVE 8-28-08 Cassette pre-order

CORY BRANAN LIVE AT THE HI-DIVE 8-28-08 Cassette pre-order

The good folks who brought you the Jon Snodgrass live at the Hi-Dive are back and this time around, they are putting out Cory Branan’s live set from the same venue. I was at this show and Cory Branan is one bad man. He is a solo artist, but he brings the intensity of a 4 piece rock band. This particular night was the night that the Obama gave his speech at the Democratic Convention. I was lucky enough to be in attendence and raced my bike afterwards to the show. The show itself was not the most well atteneded (due in part to the convention and the speech), but where it lacked in number of witnesses, Cory more than made up by giving an oustanding performance.

Only 100 cassettes are being made and we have 40 copies coming in (I am keeping one for myself so it is actually 39). After the copies sell out, a download link will be sent out to download the entire performance.

I highly recommned you pick this up as Cory is a performer you will be hearing a lot about in 2009. We are putting otu a split release with Jon Snodgrass and Cory Branan and the tracks are absolutely amazing. In a perfect world, Cory would be putting out his next album on Suburban Home, but I suspect we will hear some news aobut a bigger label putting out his next album soon.

Pick up the cassette and do yourself a favor and see him live the next time he comes to your town.

Yours Truly interviewed on Rocket Fuel Podcast

Yours Truly featured on Rocket Fuel Podcast

Throughout the past year, we have mentioned one of our new favorite podcasts, Rocket Fuel. They have always been really great about reviewing our records and playing tunes from our artists. Jeff, the host and creator of the show was kind enough to ask me to be a guest on his most recent episode. I really like Jeff and I really love this podcast. I highly encourage you to check it out as he always has interesting guests (not talking about me) and always plays great tunes. On this episode, he plays Useless I.D., Joey Cape, The Gamits, Bob Mould, Cutman, Allister, Green Day, Dance Hall Crashers, and more.

In the interview, we discuss the big year we had in 2008, Suburban Home Records, Vinyl Collective, and some of what we have planned for 2009. I think the interview came together nicely and if you have some spare time, please take a listen.

You can stream the podcast on his site or you can subscribe to it and listen to it on Itunes or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Thanks Jeff for all the support and for taking the time to have us on.

NineBullets.Net Year End Lists (Tim Barry,Drag,Two Cow)

NineBullets.net has quickly become one of the greatest voices for Americana, Alt-Country, and Folk. If you are not familiar with the site and consider those genres some of your faves, you need to book mark their site, subscribe to their feed and be aware of what they are listening to.

Yes, I am a bit biased, because as fate would have it, Nine Bullets is fond of quite a few Suburban Home releases. They recently posted their top albums of 2008 after posting their top songs of 2008 and suffice to say, Suburban Home was well represented in both lists.

On NineBullets’ year end albums list, Two Cow Garage speaking in cursive was #3, Drag the River you can’t live this way was #5, and Tim Barry manchester was #6.

On NineBullets’ top songs of the year, Two Cow Garage “Swingset Assassin” was #3, and Tim Barry “222″ was #1.

I am truly honored to even find out releases mentioned on the site, but to have our releases on their year end lists is just amazing. Thanks Nine Bullets for all the support and expect some early submissions for your Year End Lists for 2009 soon!

My Friends have great taste in music

Yesterday, I received emails from two close friends with their tops of the year and downloadable mixtapes. I figured some of you might find their tops’ lists interesting and might consider downloading their mixes.

First up, my buddy Sean Klassen is always really good about sharing mixtapes and this year was no exception. Not only did Sean make a really rad downloadable mixtape, he and his cohorts at Legwork Studio put together some nice art that is a downloadable poster. The mix has 2 suburban home acts, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground and LaGrecia (my favorite LaGrecia track, Slower than Monasses).  Along with those songs are tracks by some of my faves (Dr. Dog, Matt Pryor, Dillinger Four, Fleet Foxes, Man Man, Flight of the Conchords) as well as stuff that I am not really familiar with (I Love Math, Throw Me the Statue, The Dodos, and Tokyo Police Club). You can check out his list and download the mix here.

My other good buddy, Stabba (Steve Batchelder), is quite the music enthusiast and spent time putting together his top 50 of 2008. Of his top 50, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground was his #1 which is amazing. LaGrecia was #12, Ninja Gun #34, and Drag the River was #42. Along our releases, his list included Liam Finn, Mae Shi, Why?, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Portugal the Man, Human Highway, Man Man, Nada Surf, and more. Quite an ambitious task in and of itself, but he went one step further and sent out a downloadable link with a track from each of the 50 releases. I will post the link but I think it is a link that could potentially expire. Stabba needs to set up his own blog as he always has really interesting taste in music and finds out about most bands before you and I ever find out about them.

Tim Barry,Ninja Gun,Jr Juggernaut,Drag the River,Kay Kay make year end lists

As the year end lists start to roll in, I have noticed that at least a few of our releases made quite a number of Tops of 2008. Here are a few that I am really excited about:

Latest issue of Alternative Press 10 essential albums of 2008 – Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground’s album not only made this really great list, but they have a 2 page spread(pages 46 and 47) and on Vinyl Download’s feature, the diggin 7″ made their list of essential releases although they said “I’ve never been so proud to listen to female vocals turned up to 11″. On the 10 essential albums of 2008, AP says, “The end result is an epically eclectic album that sounds more like what the Beatles would be playing today if they were still around than awhat the actual Beatles would probably play.”

Punknews.org Staff Member Bryne Yancey’s tops of 2008
I think that Bryne and I see eye to eye. Not only did he select Ninja Gun’s Restless Rubes his top album(#1) of 2008, he put Drag the River you can’t live this way as #14, Tim Barry manchester as #13, Jr. Juggernaut ghost poison as #8, and Chuck Ragan/Austin Lucas bristle ridge as #6. He also gave Useless I.D. and Only Thunder honorable mentions and the rest of his tops list are many of our own favorites. Not only that, he is looking forward to The Takers and Austin Lucas in 2009. What a great list!

Shockhound’s Taco Tuesday Tops of 2008 [video]
Dan and Jay of Hot Topic / Shockhound have this really great video blog where they give Taco salutes to records and this episode finds them discussing some of their favorite records of the year. Inlcuded in the bunch are Murder by Death, The Sword, and two Suburban Home releases, Tim Barry and Ninja Gun.

Can You See the Sunset’s top of 2008
Eric from CYSTS put LaGrecia on parallels #49, Austin Lucas putting the hammer down #43, Two Cow Garage speaking in cursive #21, Chuck Ragan/Austin Lucas bristle ridge #18, Ninja Gun restless rubes #9, and for his #1, he put Tim Barry’s Manchester. He also mentioned that if he had another 10 to pick, he would have put Drag the River and Jr. Juggernaut on there, too.

Jordan from Pastepunk’s tops of 2008
From Jordan’s top 25, Tim Barry’s Manchester made #12 and on his honorable mentions, he put Two Cow Garage speaking in cursive and Jr. Juggernaut’s ghost poison.

These are all really exciting and hopefully there will be a few others. Thanks to all of you for even listening to our releases let alone selecting them from the millions of records you hear every year as your favorites.

So we got in the vinyl yesterday and fuck man, they look absolutely kick ass. The crew came in yesterday and will be in today and have begun pulling orders, but they will not all ship today. They will do the best they can, but there are a lot of orders to pack in one day. If they don’t go out today, we will get them out when we are back in the office early next week.

And those of you interested in future Under the Influence offerings, man, we got in 3 songs over the holiday (Andrew Jackson Jihad, Cobra Skulls, and Lemuria). All 3 songs smoke man. We have some really exciting Under the Influence news to announce soon, too!

Thanks for all the kind Holiday Gifts (Beer)

beers

beerbox

As most of you know, Beer is one of our greatest passions, next to records of course. The way we see it, drinking a delicious beer (or a few) while listening to your favorite records, is one of the greatest ways to spend our time. A few of you were so kind as to send us beers.  Steve Donahue from Delaware was so kind to send us 44 pounds of beer from his local brewery, Dogfish Head. Although Dogfish head are not the biggest brewery around, we at Suburban Home/Vinyl Collective were already well acquainted with their beers which are some of the strongest around. Their IPAs are some of the biggest IPAs being made and man are they delicious. Steve not only sent us IPAs, but he sent us their Punkin Ale, a Chicory/Coffee Stout, their Olde School, their Midas Touch (made with barley, honey, muscat grapes, and saffron) and a few others. Brandon and I were overwhelmed at all the great beer.

Coincidentally, our friends Eric and Aaron at I Heart U and Team Science also sent us a box of beer, this time from their local brewery, Saint Arnold (Austin, Texas). I was not as familiar with their beer, but I have yet to meet a microbrewer I don’t like. Eric and Aaron are not even big beer drinkers, but they know the way to our heart. Thanks guys.

I took a few home last night and it made watching the Dark Knight somewhat bearable. Got to say that the movie was highly overrated.

Thanks for all the beer and other great gifts (home-made fudge, shirts, xmas cards). For those of you out there that ever thought, “Hey, I really love those guys and gals at Vinyl Collective and Suburban Home, what could I send them to show my appreciation for what they do?”. Well, we love beer more than anything and if you live in a town with a great local brewery, we would love more than anything to get a few of their beers. We have actually been throwing around the idea of making a Suburban Home beer in 2009. Brandon has been dabbling in brewing his own beer and Josh has brewed beer for a few local breweries. How bad ass would that be?

My top songs of 2008, what are yours?

The other night, we had some friends over and as we discussed many things, the topic of Rolling Stone’s top 100 singles came up. We agreed that the list was fucking lame. Sure there were some good selections, but a bulk of the list just goes to show the great disparity between mainstream listeners and me and my peers. Figuring that most of you would have your own differing opinions about your top songs of the year, I suggest you post in our comments or on the message board, your top 5 songs of the year. Here are mine:

1. Bon Iver “Skinny Love”
2. Austin Lucas “Go West”
3. Drag the River “Having a Party” (sam cooke cover)
4. Dillinger Four “Gainesville”
5. The Gaslight Anthem “59 sound”

1. Bon Iver “Skinny Love”
The Lucero Board makes a mixtape nearly every month and the one for November not only included a few Suburban Home acts, but it included this song. I had been told to check out Bon Iver more than a few times, but this song was the standout on the mix. I could not stop listening to it. The song reminded me of what TV on the Radio might sound like if they were a solo act. I am sure that I have listened to it over 100 times since hearing it in November.

2. Austin Lucas “Go West”
When we first started talking to Austin about the possibility of doing an album, he sent over some demos he had recorded. The songs were just him, his guitar, and singing, but the songs were out of this world. 6 of the songs made it onto the “At War With Freak Folk” 10″ and those songs sound even better on vinyl. “Go West” was the song that stood out most. The song tells a sad story of heartbreak, but you wouldn’t know it from the big chorus of “Go West Emily”. We have put this demo version on our “Delicious Vinyl” LP and on the Tim Barry samplers, but Austin has just completed recording his first album for us, “Somebody Loves You” and the updated recording of this song with his family band will knock you on your socks. As great as the studio recording is, I will always cherish this demo recording.

3. Drag the River “Having a Party” (sam cooke cover)
Drag the River are easily my favorite band on the planet and there are so many songs of theirs that could easily make a tops list, but for some reason, this cover of Sam Cooke was the song I listened to most. I know that bands don’t like hearing that your favorite song of theirs is a cover, but they will agree that there was something magical with this recording. Jon and Chad recorded this really stripped down in Jon’s garage and took it to the Blasting Room to do a few touch ups. You will hear a guy in the background screaming “yeah” throughout the song and that was a Drag the River fan from their “Live at the Green Door” recording that was cut and paste throughout the song. Somehow it works. I love that Jon and Chad trade verses and always being a fan of old soul, this cover just does it for me. Expect it on Drag’s next album and their Under the Influence 7″.

4. Dillinger Four “Gainesville”
The long wait for the latest Dillinger Four album felt like an eternity and I was nervous at how good it would be. “Midwestern Songs”, “Versus God”, and the collection album, “This Shit is Genius” are 3 of my favorite albums and although I liked Situationist Comedy, it was my least favorite. Luckily these guys recorded an album that hits the mark and “Gainesville” was the rock anthem of 2008. The song that gives a shout out to Gainvesille Fest was our soundtrack at our first ever trip to the Fest. The hook “Feels like Summer in Octoooooooober just grabs you.

5. The Gaslight Anthem “59 sound”
Side One Dummy really lucked out when they signed these rising stars from New Jersey. The band had only released one album and a 4 song ep before recording this breakout album. Taking inspiration from 50′s soul, the band recorded their most polished album. Throughout the record you can hear elements of Bruce Springsteen, The Cure, and Sam Cooke, but this first single from the album really cooks. The band shot a video for the title track and every week the band reached a new milestone. I remember thinking how big of a deal it was when the video and the band was featured on Steven’s untitled rock show. You just knew that it was going to be a big year for Gaslight.

Hope you enjoy my tops list. I might try to get ralph to set up a stream of these songs so you to can hear them all, but let us know what songs you listened to most in 2008. I am planning on emailing a bunch of friends for their tops of 2008 so expect a page set up really soon.

VC/SH: The Day After the Day After Xmas Sale

Partly because I am trying to do a lot of nothing, I did not get around to posting this day after Xmas sale on the day after Xmas. The sale is really simple. If you spend $100 or more in our store, between the dates of December 26th and January 5th, you will receive a coupon code for $20 on January 6th. This can happen one of two ways:

1. You spend over $100.00 on a single order between these order dates.

2. You spend over $100.00 over multiple orders (if this is the case, you must notify Seabron by email of this occurrence.)

I hope everyone had a great holiday and is gearing up for a great new year.
