Jay-Z’s “Open Letter” may be the best press release ever recorded.

This week’s been rather rough on Jay-Z. Not only did his recent trip to Cuba nearly start a second missile crisis (okay, not really), but he’s also faced a fair amount of scrutiny for selling his share in the Brooklyn Nets (to start his own Sports agency, no less).

And yet, rather then continue taking a beating in the press, Hov got together with Timbaland and Swizz Beatz and recorded a rapped press-release, dubbed “Open Letter.” The piece presumbly attacks the likes of Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who publically objected to Hov’s state-sanctioned Cuban pilgrimage. ”Politicians never did shit for me / Except lie to me, distort history,” he says in the song. “Want to give me jail time and a fine / Fine, let me commit a real crime.”

As for his shedding of the Brooklyn Nets the rapper added, “I woulda moved the Nets to Brooklyn for free / Except I made millions off you fucking dweebs.” In reality, selling his stock is a necessary step in becoming a certified sports agent. It was announced this week that Jay-Z would be partnering with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to create a new sports agency under his Roc Nation franchise. Fun fact: they’ve already signed their first client, Yankee’s second-basemen Robinson Cano.

Frankly, if all press-releases where produced by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz I would hate my inbox a lot less.

Hey, Listen! Queens of the Stone Age’s “My God Is The Sun”

As we inch closer to …Like Clockwork‘s June 4th release date, Queen’s has graciously released a new single to wet our appetites. While it’s not as instantly catchy as “Little Sister” or “3′s & 7′s,” the track is unmistakably Queens of the Stone Age. Which really drives home the point: even mediocre Queens is better than no Queens at all.

Oh, and did you hear that Eddie Vedder likes cowbells?

Today marks not only the release of Paramore‘s totally decent self-titled album, but also the debut of their latest music video. Rather than bemoaning the fact that music video’s of late seem to lake any coherent vision or artist flare, I will instead direct you to Hayley William‘s eyebrows. She’s been bleaching them lately, for some reason. I mean, I can’t be the only one bothered by this, right? So congrats, Hayley. Your latest album isn’t terrible, and you look weird.

Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience” sells 968,000 copies

You know what’s cool? Almost a million in sales. After a six-year absence from the music scene, Justin Timberlake’s latest record,  The 20/20 Experience, debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Top 200, selling over 968,000 copies in its first week.

This news is notable for a number of reasons. Firstly: Someone sold a shit-ton of records, which rarely happens anymore. Secondly, it marks Timberlake’s biggest single-week release – beating FutureSex/LoveSounds which sold 684,000 copies in its first week in 2006. Thirdly, it places the album 19th overall for single-week debutes since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking such things way back in 1991.

Apple’s iTunes is reportedly the album’s top seller, followed closely by Target. Unlike other tainted releases, 20/20 wasn’t subject to bulk sales or Amazon discounts – making it a legit success.

Curiously, the album will be geting a sequel later this year. Evidently, the title is meant to be taken literally with another 10 tracks excepted around November. The revelation came from Root’s drummer Questlove who let the news slip last week. Timberlake has confirmed the spoiler, however, wouldn’t commit to the release window.

In related news, Taylor Swift has apparently joined several online dating sites in order to accelerate the writing process of her next album. In a statement given only to us, the singer/songwriter lamented the success of Timberlake’s latest album, adding, “No way am I going to let some stink boy muscle in on my SoundScan territory, y’all!”

RIAA reports slight slump in 2012 sales, says it may be reason to celebrate

You know the music industry has had a rough decade (or two) when a marginal decrease in revenue is a cause to celebrate. The RIAA reported today that overall sales in 2012 where down 0.9 precent from the year before, however, that this trend may denote stabilization in the market. Mind you, $7.1 billion in revenue is a stark contrast to the $14 billion reported in 2000.

Digital sales seem to be one of the factors in less-than-expected decrease. Sales from “access models” like Spotify, Rdio, and YouTube where up 14% from the year before, generating over $4 billion in profit and accounting for 17% of overall sales.

Interestingly, a similar trend has occurred on the global stage. Last month, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reported that global music sales were up for the first time in 15 years (to the tune of $16.5 billion.) Again, we’re talking about 0.3% bump from the year before – still an upward trend is an upward trend. Digital sales were also highlighted as a major factor in international growth, accounting for about 34% of overall sales.

The take away here is that the music industry looks have learned its lesson from ignoring digital media as practical source of revenue. Of course, I’m posting this on a site devoted to vinyl enthusiasts… so the point may be slightly moot to begin with.

Queens of the Stone Age officially announce new record, more guest stars

After months of teasing, Queens of the Stone Age have finally the confirmed the existence of their upcoming record, …Like Clockwork. Set to release this June via Matador Records, Clockwork will mark the band’s first release in almost six years. In a note sent to Kerrang magazine, the band cryptically likened the album’s recording to an uncontrollable emotional roller-coaster. “Rather than control the direction of the recordings,” the note read, “We decided to ride shotgun on our emotional bandwagon. We embraced our evil, held the horrible, licked the lunacy and blew the beautiful.”

As previously reported, the record will be rich with guest appearances, including Sir Elton John, Scissor Sister’s Jack Shears, former Queens’ bass player Nick Oliveri, longtime Queens’ contributor Mark Lanegan, Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl, and finally Arctic Monkey’s frontman Alex Turner.

The band has also put up a new splash-page teasing the release, accompanied by short snippets from the upcoming track. Reload the page to cycle through the various teasers.

Shop Radio Cast are proud to announce the release of Blink 182′s “Take Off Your Pants and Jacket” LP with three bonus 7″. Tests have been approved and the project has entered the final production stages. We anticipate these to be ready in April however, we have set release date  for May 7, 2013 to avoid running into any delays from Record Store Day pressings. The first pressing will be limited to a total of 2,500 copies and will include a never before released foreword written by Mark Hoppus. Complete details are as follows:

Vinyl Info:
- Triple Panel Gatefold jacket with 7″ Inserts
- Each 7″ housed in a glue pocket jacket with a full color CMYK insert
- LP is housed in a full color Inner Sleeve
- First pressing, limited to 2,500 include Mark Hoppus Foreword
- First pressing LP is pressed 180 Gram Black and includes a yellow, green and red 7″.

Acknowledging this was to be previously released by another label, Shop Radio Cast is offering a priority pre order and a 10% discount to those who previously pre ordered with proof of purchase. To receive the 10% discount and assure advance pre order:

Advance Pre Orders will occur early March, however we encourage those who purchased to set up their advance purchase and discount immediately.

Here are the answers to a few FAQ’s we anticipate:

1.)  Can I buy the 7″ without the LP?
No. Unfortunately due to licensing restrictions the 7″ are not to be sold separately and are only allowed to be sold as a LP &3×7″ bundle.

2.) When will pre orders launch?
Pre orders will launch early March. Those who previously ordered this who follow the instructions above will receive an advance pre order, allowing them to purchase 48 hours prior to the public. We will announce both the public and advance pre order date and time next week.

3.) What is the same and what is different about how this is being pressed?
The artwork components will remain the same as they were supposed to be. Each set will include a reverse cardboard triple panel gatefold with three 7″ pockets. Each 7″ will be housed in a full color glue pocket with insert. The LP will be housed in a full color inner sleeve. There will be NO gold foil ’10th anniversary’ stamp on any of the copies.

We have changed the vinyl pressing from various variants to one variant. We have done this to match the foreword quantities allowing an opportunity for people to purchase this without having to compete for various colors.

4.) Will you repress once first pressing is sold out?
We are not sure at this time. We do know that after this the foreword will never be released again. As well if we press with the bonus 7″ again, they will not be on color.

Someone call off the search, Rival School’s lost material has been “Found”

Fans of Walter Schreifels‘ Rival Schools should be excited to hear that the band will finally release their mythical second LP this April. Mind you, this release should not to be confused with 2011′s Pedals. Dubbed Found, the new record includes eleven remastered tracks that the band originally intended as their follow-up album following the departure of guitarist Ian Love. Bits and pieces of this material have surfaced throughout the years, however, Found will mark the first time these tracks have been released officially.

We’re also excited to announce that our store is responsible for the 180 gram vinyl release. You can preorder it here. Found will be officially found on April 9, 2013.
