WORST Song of the Day: Antony and the Johnsons "Shake that Devil"

WORST Song Of The Day

BEST Songs of the day
Today’s installment of “Song of the Day” is brought to you by yours truly, Virgil Dickerson. I am feeling a little surly today and decided to feature a Worst song of the day. I know I know, that isn’t very posi, but sometimes, you have to talk a little shit. I actually used to be a fan of Antony and the Johnsons and was really excited to hear this EP, Another World. I was listening to it and when this song came on, Andy had to retreat to the kitchen to laugh in an attempt to not hurt my feelings. At the same time he was laughing in the kitchen, I was thinking outloud, “What the Fuck”. I am all for people doing different things and am always excited to hear new music, but this song is absolutely horrible. It isn’t the worst song I ever heard, but it is pretty close. With lyrics like, “That Pig Made Me Feel So Bad”, I would really like to know what the inspiration was for this song. I just have to wonder how this record and this artist is so critically acclaimed. Am I off-based? Please listen to this song and let me know what you think. Because of this song, I can no longer listen to anything Antony has recorded, even the songs I once liked. When our front office is in a weird funk, I tend to play this song to get everyone re-focused. Sure, I get lots of flack everytime I play it, but after the song has played, we can regroup and get everyone working together again. So the song does have that going for it. Sorry if this offends anyone, but I just had to talk a little shit. Let me know your thoughts on this song and this artist. The release, “Another World” is available in the VC store, you can find it here. The song, “Shake That Devil” is the 3rd track off of “Another World”. You can download the song here. As the Song of the Day continues, you can find past installments here. You will also notice that each week’s streaming player will have each Song of the Day added so that by week’s end, there will be 5 songs. We hope you like the track.

Having a rough day, Watch this video!

So I am kind of feeling sorry for myself because I am hungover after seeing 2 great shows over the past 2 nights (Teenage Bottlerocket/Nobodys on Monday, Tim Barry/Austin Lucas/Josh Small/Chad Price). I think that I am getting too old to stay out til 3 am on a school night.

Ralph just shared this video with me and I wanted to share it with any of you having a rough day. It is an uplifting video that I hope puts a smile to your face.

Song of the Day: Avail "Fix"

Today’s installment of “Song of the Day” is brought to you by yours truly, Virgil Dickerson.

I decided to pick this Avail song for a few reasons. Yesterday, when Teenage Bottlerocket stopped by, Ray got super stoked when he saw that we had Avail vinyl and picked up a copy of “4 AM Friday”. When we got dinner, we were talking about Avail and about all of these earlier albums. I guess Fat Mike when talking to Teenage Bottlerocket said that he wanted to hear their demos of their new songs because he felt like he had put out the worst albums by Avail, Against Me, and a third band I can’t remember when those bands put out their first albums for Fat. I like those Avail Fat albums, but to me the best material is on 4Am Friday and Over the James. I was also thinking about picking an Avail song since Tim Barry will be playing tonight and it is always a treat when he plays an Avail song in his set. Maybe it will happen tonight.

Words cannot even begin to describe the influence that Avail has had on the musical landscape. A bunch of punk rockers from Richmond melded Punk Rock and Hardcore opening my eyes to heavier music. To this day, Avail put on one of the most intense sets I had ever seen and as much as I love seeing Tim Barry perform live (he is amazing), I miss not seeing Avail regularly.

The album, “4 AM Friday” is available in the VC store (as are other Avail albums), you can find it here.

The song, “Fix” is the 9th track off of “4 AM Friday”. You can download the song here.

As the Song of the Day continues, you can find past installments here. You will also notice that each week’s streaming player will have each Song of the Day added so that by week’s end, there will be 5 songs. We hope you like the track.

Visitor to VC: Teenage Bottlerocket and Toby from Red Scare

Teenage Bottlerocket and Toby from Red Scare (3-24-09) – 3/4ths of Teenage Bottlerocket and Toby from Red Scare hung out at the office yesterday. It was really great seeing those guys and catching up. Got to hear the story of how the whole Fat signing came to be and how stoked they are to be recording their debut for Fat in June. Got to also catch up with Toby and hear about the upcoming Cobra Skulls recording session for their new album on Red Scare (so stoked). Teenage Bottlerocket played such an amazing set last night including 2 songs which I filmed but was told to hold off on posting. You can see a bunch of songs from their set last night on our Youtube Channel. They fucking rocked it.
