Friends, we are so excited to share with you our Under the Influence Streaming Player which now has the two songs that make up the O Pioneers!!!/New Bruises Under the Influence 7″. Listen to them and while you are at it, listen to the other 9 volumes of the Under the Influence series. We will soon begin working on a CD and possibly a limited edition double LP of the series.

And while you are at it, make sure you take advantage of the 3 Under the Influence 7″s we posted for pre-order yesterday (Joey Cape/Mike Hale, O Pioneers!!!/New Brusies, and Kevin Seconds/Kepi Ghoulie). All 3 are selling pretty quickly and before long, they too will be out of print.

It’s exciting for us to have nearly pressed 10 volumes of this series with no end in site! Stream, buy, and find out news of upcoming Under the Influence records on the UTI Page. Buy the UTI 7″s in the VC store with this link.

JULIAN PLENTI “Is Skyscraper” LP

Julian Plenti is….Paul Banks (main man/lead singer) from Interpol. Haven’t heard the solo stuff yet, but I loved the first 2 interpol records. Here is what Matador says of Julian Plenti:

“From 1998 to 2003, Julian Plenti performed in and around Manhattan as an acoustic solo artist. Venues that played host include Tobacco Road, Pete’s Candy Store, The Knitting Factory, The Living Room, and “Lach’s Antihoot” at Sidewalk Cafe.

In 2006 Plenti began to demo a selection of his music using Logic Pro. That selection took shape as “Skyscraper.”

In the Fall of 2008 Mr. Plenti took the demoed album to the Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn to be re-recorded with live instrumentation.
He hired session performers to play the string and horn arrangements, and also enlisted some friends. Mike Stroud of Ratatat and Charles Burst of The Occasion guest on “Skyscraper;” Sam Fogarino of Interpol plays drums on “Games For Days;” and Striker Manley of Stiff Jesus appears on “No Chance Survival” and “Fun That We Have.”

We will have records on Tuesday, August 4th.

THE APERS “You Are Only As Strong…” LP

Mike Park says of the Apers, “The Apers are a three-piece punk rock band from Rotterdam. That’s in Europe, Americans. They’ve been playing nonstop since 1996, and have previously released four full length albums, and a bunch of 7″ singles, EPs, and compilation tracks. We like putting out records from foreign bands so that we will have a free place to stay when we go there on vacation. That’s business savviness, right?”

The Apers have long been putting out great pop-punk records. If you dig old Lookout, current Red Scare, or all the pop-punk re-issues Asian Man has been doing, you will dig this record.

we will have vinyl in hand this next week.

Today, we are proud to bring you our August Vinyl Collector of the Month, Sterling Sheldon. Sterling has actually been buying records from Suburban Home since way back and since we started Vinyl Collective, he has been around since the beginning. Sterling lives in Hawaii without any record stores in his local area. He avidly orders directly from labels all over and from what I can tell, he talks to bands and labels from all over. Sheldon took the time to answer questions about why he buys vinyl, recent record purchases, record he would like to see pressed, and more.

Please take a second to read the interview. Thanks Sheldon for taking the time to answer our questions and thanks for your continued support.

We are excited to announce the tenth, eleventh, and twelth releases of our Under the Influence series. The series finds bands we love recording songs that have influenced their song writing. The artwork has been put together by the very talented Mitch Clem and Nation of Amanda who have been asked to make their own renditions of the album art that the song being covered originally appeared.

For this tenth release, O Pioneers!!! are covering “American Heart” by Piebald and New Bruises are covering “Nu Bruises” by Superchunk. The 7″s will come with a coupon that will allow you to download the tracks as mp3s. 1,500 7″s will be pressed (500 of white vinyl, 1,000 translucent blue vinyl)

For this eleventh release, Joey Cape is covering “Watch Me Bleed” by Tears for Fears and Mike Hale is covering “Turnstile” by Hot Water Music. The 7″s will come with a coupon that will allow you to download the tracks as mp3s. 1,500 7″s will be pressed (500 on Brown vinyl, 1000 Yellow/Gold vinyl)

For this twelth release, Kevin Seconds is covering “Rabbit Fighter” by T. Rex and Kepi Ghoulie is covering “Hot Love” also by T. Rex. The 7″s will come with a coupon that will allow you to download the tracks as mp3s. 1,500 7″s will be pressed (500 of white vinyl, 1,000 translucent red vinyl)

All 3 7″s are due to be here by the end of September. Each Under the Influence 7″ will have test pressing contests that you can enter by pre-ordering the record. Good luck.

Turkish Techno / Anchor split
Turkish Techno: Riverside, CA is a rough gig for anyone who’s not a knuckledragger or a meth-head. It’s almost impossible to not choke on all the chrome ball sacks hanging off the differentials of jacked-up pickups. House parties are systematically busted. Beer in bars such as Worthington’s is served warm. Turkish Techno closes the ranks and holds off the siege with a wall of sound, friend/gang vocals, supercharged everything, bordering on reckless. Listening to them is like fingering a cocked mouse trap in a room full of mouse traps. Every time I’ve seen these dudes live, one of them has been injured: broken legs and motorcycle pipe burns.
Anchor: Ever think—and no disrespect—that Hot Water Music just got too complicated near the end? That their tear-it-apart energy of the Circle Jerks was given a rest for something more shiny and complex? The Anchor rip the last couple of chapters of that book out, starting off at the point where the Angry Samoans could still be cited as a credible reference… and then they shoot their instruments into the sky. Stratospheric and fisticuffy.

Infected “Awake In Our Own Graves” 7”
Solid, metal-leaning punk from Lexington, Kentucky. Suspicions are that more than one member has a faded Metallica T-shirt in his closet and keeps it in rotation. We all understand that it’s a sliver of time, but remember back to the early days of grunge, before the tag became a smear? Remember that month or two? That earnest crunch, the loss of pretense, those sharply pointed songs that were jabbed directly at hair metal’s bloated and Spandex’d corpse? The Infected live their musical lives in that small window. Never self-indulgent, meandering, or dazzled by the lure of a solo, it’s straight-ahead music by straight-ahead dudes.

300 pressed:
4 blue marble
4 bright yellow
6 army green
13 mustard
15 chartreuse
16 violet
20 sea foam green
23 sky
32 purple

Dude Jams / Too Many Daves split 7”
Dude Jams: Bearded guy in Dude Jams with little kittens on his short socks. “You want some of this? I’ll fuckin’ kill you.” Three gangsters in a lowered Lexus glower. The light turns green. They just stare. Dude Jams guy slaps his chest. The car slowly creeps through a red light. Dude Jams was pretty close to losing a member. Point? Not quite sure how Dude Jams avoid being a complete Crimpshrine mess; it’s almost like a Yoda / droid trick, except that the music’s just slapping you in your face with your own hands, like they shouldn’t be able to get away so easily with what they’re pulling off… but they do.
Too Many Daves: None of the following is true. 1.) This record was performed in blackface. 2.) It was recorded at an AA meeting. 3.) Like the new Misfits, there’s a strict dietary and exercise regimen to be a member. 4.) They write their set lists on sticks of butter. The following is true: going through life fat and stupid is, actually, a brilliant way to handle the almost unbearable weight of existence. Let the Daves’ music guide you to a better place, where no one actually knows much of anything except that partying’s tight and self-destruction can be a creative act.

PRE-ORDER WON’T BE LIVE UNTIL 2PM MST

We are excited to announce the pre-order for Achilles “Hospice”. Hospice was originally released on CD via HEX records in 2007; the CD can still be purchased through them at this link.

From the Hex site, “The ridiculously good second full length from Rochester’s own Achilles. Though way on the back burner due to members commitments with Polar Bear Club, Soul Control, and fatherhood, this record gained so much praise just by how freaking good the songwriting is they didn’t need to bother playing shows in support of it. While heavily rooted in a ‘mathcore’ vein, influences are not strictly limited to the Botch school of thought. Add bits of Majority Rule, City Of Caterpillars, Faraquet, and straight up melodic hardcore and you get this excellent document of a band with passion seeping out every pore. The album sounds delicious.” Farewell Party decided to license the album for release on vinyl in hopes of giving the album the attention it deserves.

Punknews said of the album in a review, “Hospice is assuredly a step up from the also excellent The Dark Horse, which combined some of the best aspects from heavy but ambitious acts like Botch and Breather Resist. Achilles seem to forge their own territory here, diversifying their sound and concentrating less on atmospherics and more on a heavy base, mixed up tempos and interchanging riffs. “We Are Fixtures” is one of the best examples of this, in addition to being possibly Hospice’s best track; Rory Vangrol (also of How We Are) kicks it up a notch repetitively screaming “wake up, wake up! We’re losing everything!,” and leads the charge perfectly — rarely has Achilles sounded this urgent, while the band floor the listener with a breathtaking sense of dynamics.?

The pressing for “Hospice” will be in the following editions:
Marble Tan – 114 VC exclusive (90 copies will be available through VC)
Black – 107
Grey – 143
Camo – 220
50 PROMO / ADVANCE copies (Black Vinyl, but promo copies, sent out to distros and reviewers prior to release (VC will have 15 copies)
We will also have a Test Press Contest (only 60 made, hand made covers by Joe OHIO PRIDE).

Vinyl is expected to be completed in 3 weeks.
