Archive for August, 2009

Last week, we posted this photo of Billy from Silverstein. We did a contest associated with the photo where we asked people to identify the records he was holding up. Bonus points were awarded for selecting the color of vinyl and for guessing what shirt Bill is wearing. We had a number of contestents, but the following 5 people did the best and each received a $10 gift certificate:

Bram Gonshor, Adrian (enjoyadrian on the board), Jason Novak, James Ness, Ivan Valverde. Congratulations friends.

If you are curious what records Bill is holding and what colors they were on, here are the answers.

The Smiths “Meat Is Murder” –black
Bon Iver “For Emma” –black
Attack In Black “Marriage” –black
Hot Water Music “No Division” –grey
Minor Threat “First 2 7”s” –green

For bonus points, Bill is wearing a Descendents “I Don’t Want To Grow Up” T-shirt

Thanks to everyone who participated.

Our friend Justin from Underground Communique has been quiet as of late, but today, we received the thumb’s up to post the Methadone’s upcoming 7″, the Methadones / Copyrights split LP, and the Explod and Make Up LP. Here’s a little more about each release:

METHADONES 7″ – Brand new 2 song 7″(only the bands second 7″ ever) from the Methadones from Chicago. This single includes a new song called “Exit 17″ and a re-recorded and superior full band version of the song “I believe” that originally appeared as an acoustic version on their last full length “This Won’t Hurt” on Red Scare. Both songs and this 7″ were written and are dedicated to Dan’s fiancee Alisha. Test Pressing contest for those of you who order this record.

METHADONES/COPYRIGHTS SPLIT LP – Brand new split LP from the Methadones and the Copyrights! This release was previously self released by Dan from the Methadones and Adam from the Copyrights record label Transparent Records on CD only, this LP, co-released by Underground Communique and It’s Alive Records has 6 songs each from two of today’s greatest bands together on one record. That makes for a dozen reasons why this is one of the best splits ever! The Methadones and The Copyrights do Illinois proud on this collaboration – it’s north meets south with awesome results. Test Pressing contest for those of you who order this record.

EXPLODE AND MAKE UP LP – Debut EP from Chicago’s Explode and Make Up(the band features: Denis from 88 Fingers Louie, Jeff Dean from the Bomb/Four Star Alarm/Tomorrow’s Gone, Pete from the Methadones/the Bomb & Mike Pinaud from Tomorrow’s Gone) This EP has 6 songs of melodic hardcore ala Dag Nasty that fans of anything from Husker Du to Verse or Betrayed could appreciate.

This band formed a few years ago, played a few shows, stopped playing because literally everyone got married, life happened, other bands were busy, now they’re back. This EP was half recorded 2+ years ago, half a few months ago. All re-mixed by Tom Petta from Big Wig & Detournement.

PAUCITY “Deer Bird Bear Ship” LP pink vinyl

It’s been four years and a few lineup changes since PAUCITY’s Friction Records debut An Untitled Album, but their sophomore effort DEER BIRD BEAR SHIP has been well worth the wait. The new set finds the band back as it started, with the original musicians upping the ante on composition and craft in instrumental, experimental music. Recorded in early 2009 at the White Lodge in Wayland, MI, Deer Bird Bear Ship was mastered by Al McAvoy and documents the next stage in PAUCITY.

Building on the framework set by post-rock innovators Mogwai, Tortoise and Don Caballero, the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based foursome continues to extend the possibilities of vocal-less rock music, offering equal nods to their previously named forbearers, as well as the sounds of Miles Davis’ electric outings; electronic music pioneers Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin; post-hardcore titans Isis and Envy; and the atmospheric work of alt-rock mainstays Radiohead and The Cure.

LA CACAHOUETTE “French For Peanut” LP

The CD “French for Peanut,” by Buffalo, N.Y., trio La Cacahouette, would likely be described by many music commentators, at least in part, as “progressive.” But what is progressive? Often it refers to virtuosic playing and long, labyrinthe compositions with grand themes. All of which is mostly true with La Cacahouette. But how they’re really progressive is the way they can make their music so varied without having it lose its way. “French for Peanut” has so many elements, layers and feelings to parse, you pick up on something new every time you listen to it. It’s music you can get emotionally vested in and not feel cheated afterwards.

Powerful production values help too. Blake “Spoonman” Ellman fuels every song with cavernous drumming, particularly his four-armed performance on “Fiction Teeth.” Tracks like “No Time to Rock” convey an uncanny depth, this one combining a simple, stately piano line with riffing guitar, blanketing synths and Ellman’s visceral thunder for a propulsion that belies its title. “Brain Chips” can best be described as a series of tempered explosions, complete with ethereal forces and watery textures. The flight-fingered rave-up in the middle of “You Done Me Wrong, Willie” offers the best of Mars Volta and Explosions in the Sky. In a world of pre-packaged music and cautious, market-tested product, “French for Peanut” stands out. It’s altogether too sonically heavy for the average person, which means it’ll probably be an overlooked gem that inspires some of the future’s creative geniuses and eventually earns its rightful title as a cult classic. Rather than wait for that to happen, listen to it now and remember why you gave a damn about music in the first place.

Buy this and you will automatically be entered to win a test pressing! Good Luck. Copies should arrive next week.

WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH “In Shoals” LP milky clear w/ yellow & orange splatter
WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH “In Shoals” LP coke bottle blue w/ red splatter vinyl
WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH “In Shoals” LP solid purple & solid green vinyl

Tired of former bands and musical projects going no where, five Berlin citizens formed WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH between the end of 2005 and spring 2006 with a clear goal: To mix all their infl uences into an extreme and experimental cocktail, combining the technical fury of Mathcore, the brutality of Grindcore, the spirit of Hardcore and a fi ne blend of smooth Jazz. These Germans have the quality and creativity to resist any categorization, incorporating a variety of different genres and sub-styles without having to cater to any one particular scene or hype.

After releasing a Split-CD with MOLOTOV SOLUTION from Las Vegas on Twelve Gauge Records, the quintet signed to LIFEFORCE RECORDS for the release of their full length debut “Transmetropolitan” in 2007. The word on WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH immediately exploded and when the album hit the street, the reaction and fanfare from their Lifeforce debut got them countless headlining and support tours with over 250 shows all over Europe as well as the USA.

“In Shoals” takes extreme metal to the next level, as it combines advanced complexity with devastating brutality in one violent comprehensive approach. WFAHM’s extreme-crossover is presented with an enthusiastic yet serious demeanour that can not be ignored by any fan of brutal and experimental Metal and Hardcore. The new shouter Nico (former vocalist of THE OCEAN) is adding a whole new depth to the band’s all over sound, ranging from gut-wrenching, overturning screams to deep grunts and everything in between. With “In Shoals,” WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH has managed to come up with something quite personal and reckless as it is challenging and extremely enjoyable.

We all know that Joe Proffitt is one amazing individual, but check out this really great gift Joe sent us. Joe for some time has been making custom collectibles that go with records/labels he fully backs. This “Rabid Pac-Man” came along with some custom print records that will accompany orders of the Dingees’ vinyl we have for sale (more on that later). The letter/Pac-Man was so cool, we had to put it up on our walls. Thanks Joe, the vinyl collecting community are so lucky to have you around. And thanks for the very kind words. It is easy to at times become burnt out on doing all that we do so nice letters like this remind us of why we are involved.
