BILLY WALLACE "The Road Spit Me Out" CD

BILLY WALLACE “The Road Spit Me Out” CD

Billy Wallace was the primary songwriter and vocalist for the Wading Girl, a great band from Virginia. The Wading Girl had toured with Tim Barry and Josh Small once and I met them at last year’s Fest. They were a great band, I say were because they are no longer around. Billy didn’t let them hold him back as he just released his first solo album, “The Road Spit Me Out”. I recommend this album for fans of The Wading Girl and fans of Americana in generaly. He has said that he will be releasing the record on vinyl at some point so here’s hoping that happens sooner than later. In the meantime, I recommend you pick up the CD.

DEEP SLEEP “Three Things At Once” CD
UNSEEN FORCE “In Search Of The Truth” CD
86 MENTALITY “Goin Nowhere Fast” CD

We at Vinyl Collective/Suburban Home have decided to start carrying more CDs from all the great labels we currently buy vinyl from. We plan to relaunch the site, IndieHQ to be the web cousins to Vinyl Collective. The site will feature and promote great CDs that we are carrying in our store. We are in a position to help great artists and great, independent labels by carrying the CDs. As much as we love vinyl, I know that there are folks out there who would rather have an album on CD. If we currently buy vinyl from you, get in touch with us as we want to carry your CDs, too.

Here are 3 CD releases by Grave Mistake. GM are a great label based in Richmond, Virginia, who continue to put out killer punk rock releases. Check out these CDs or check out the many singles and LPs they have also released. Great label!

Download DRAG THE RIVER "Live at the Starlight" for FREE!!!

That’s right friends, our good buddy and friend through music, Jon Snodgrass (of Drag the River) made the executive decision to give away the mp3s for Drag the River’s live album, Live at the Starlight”. There are no strings attached, no payment plan, no commitment to buy later. Just visit this link and download the incredible live album. While there are no strings attached, we do encourage you to complete your Drag the River collection as there are links to all of their releases which are all currently on sale! CDs are $5, and their vinyl is being sold at our wholesale prices. Make sure you check out Jon Snodgrass’ releases and Chad Price’s debut solo album.

Take a look at this picture of Jon Snodgrass and I will explain how this generous offer came to be. As some of you may or may not know, the CD version of “Live at the Starlight” has been out of print for a while now. Whenever a release goes out of print, a handful of enterprising individuals take advantage of the inability to easily purchase the release and sell their own copy(ies) through sites like Ebay or Amazon for outrageous prices. One such individual has “Live at the Starlight” for sale for $80 on Ebay. You can’t blame people for doing this, but Jon felt that if we gave the album for free, no one would feel the need to spend so much money on the CD. We had the conversation about this while at our good friends’ Brian and Liv’s wedding and maybe Jon felt generous because of the love in the air at such a beautiful ceremony. Hell, Jon may have been drunk feeling good because he was looking so damn good. I actually haven’t spoke to him since this conversation so let’s take advantage of Jon’s good will and get what I think is an absolutely amazing live album.

“Live At the Starlight” I believe was originally released in 2002 by Mars Motors. We helped distribute the re-released version which was packaged with a bonus CD of their “Live at the Green Door” recording in 2005. The album has been out of print for a few years. The live album features mostly tracks from “Hobos Demos” and “Closed” and “Chicken Demos” but also features covers by the Misfits and Steve Earle. Even if you have these albums, you will love how these songs sound live.

GREGORY ALAN ISAKOV "This Empty Northern Hemisphere" LP pre-order announced

Friends, we are excited to announce the pre-order for the vinyl for Gregory Alan Isakov’s brilliant album, “The Empty Northern Hemisphere”. Gregory self-released the album on CD and digitally and since helping him out with distribution and loving his album, we suggested helping co-release the vinyl. The record has been drawing praise from all over getting comparisons to Rocky Votolato, Iron and Wine, Nick Drake, and Bob Dylan. Gregory has toured with Brandi Carlile (who sings on over half of the album), Indigo Girls (who are huge fans of Gregory), and soon will be touring with Ani Difranco. I can’t recommend this album enough.

Please listen to the streaming player we have set up for “This Empty Northern Hemisphere”. Let us know what you think. We will be posting the pre-order on Friday, August 28th, 2009. The LP pressing will be out of an edition of 500 copies split equally between Gregory and Suburban Home. The vinyl will come with a digital download coupon. Greg will be playing an LP release party on Saturday, October 17th at the Bluebird Theater.

Video: Portugal The Man "Everyone is Golden" live at Twist & Shout

Brandon just posted another video from Portugal the Man’s acoustic instore at Twist and Shout on Friday, August 14th. I think Brandon has a few more to post. Take a listen, they performed so well and the songs sounded so good unplugged.

PO: CHUCK RAGAN "Gold Country" LP black vinyl

CHUCK RAGAN “Gold Country” LP black vinyl

For most of us the phrase Gold Country evokes memories of the 49ers who flocked to California by boat and covered wagon in order to seek fortune for themselves and their families. Chuck Ragan’s latest disc may be coming out a few lifetimes after the gold rush of the mid-nineteenth century, however there’s a timeless quality to the album that embodies the hope and hard work that helped define that period in the American consciousness. That has a lot to do with the fact that there’s nothing preconceived about Gold Country. It’s simply the sound of a talented songwriter doing what his kind has been doing for centuries: playing simple songs alongside a close group of friends not for hope of financial gains, but because he literally has no other choice.

This is my favorite Chuck Ragan album! The songs are so good; I have been a big fan of his earlier albums but this one is tops for me. There are some great guest musicians on the album from Austin Lucas to the Anderson Family Bluegrass band.

This album was pressed on 500 color, 1,000 on black, but let me warn you now that the 100 copies we are getting in will sell super quick. Right now, the only place to get Chuck’s new album is through Chuck’s merch page, our site, and when the Revival Tour begins.

Visitor to VC: Billy from Silverstein, a contest

Billy from Silverstein (8-25-09) – Billverstein (or Billy from Silverstein) stopped by the office with our good friend T-bone (most know him as Dylan) who just got back from the Warped Tour. Bill hitched a ride on Dylan’s bus and had a day off in Denver. There have been countless times that we have tried to have Bill visit the office, but for one reason or other, it just didn’t happen. Luckily, there was no coordinating, he just stopped by, and we got to hang out for a good while. For those of you who don’t know, Bill has an insane record collection. At one time or other, he had the largest Hot Water Music collection (he might still have it, but he has recently sold a handful off pieces from his collection). We talked a long while about his collection, about Victory, about pressing records, the Coop (he is a member), and about a possible future Under the Influence 7″. Bill is a good dude. Thanks for stopping by.

We joked around about doing a contest involving the Bill’s picture and this morning, I say why not. Here is how it will go down. Correctly identify all 5 records in Bill’s hand, bonus points will be awarded to those who correctly identify the color of vinyl of each record, and further bonus point will be awarded if you can correctly identify the band t-shirt Bill is wearing. We will select 5 winners who will each get $10 gift certifcates. Winners will be picked on Friday, August 28th. Email Seabron to participate. Good luck!

See other visitors to VC here.

Photos: A Wilhelm Scream,Streetlight Manifesto,Darkest Hour,Nathen Maxwell

A few things to be aware of with these photos, the A Wilhelm Scream yellow vinyl has arrived, but we are still waiting on the black vinyl. I was told the stamper broke and there are another 100 copies to be pressed. We should have those soon. We are not going to start shipping these until we get all the vinyl in. And coop members, expect an email soon about this release and making sure your address is updated. We finally got in the Streetlight and Darkest Hour vinyl. Bear with us as we are super slammed and have some extra help helping out with all the pre-orders. We also got in the Nathen Maxwell record which if you haven’t heard is really great. I highly recommend checking it out.
