Test Pressing Winner – The Gaslight Anthem "American Slang"

The Gaslight Anthem “American Slang” Test Pressing Winner – Steve Donahue

Congratulations buddy; you pretty much just won the crown jewel of test pressings. I actually thought I was getting 2 test pressings (I will double check on this) so if we do get another one, expect another winner to be announced. Those of you curious, this test pressing was from the Pirates Press pressing. Pirates Press pressed the Vinyl Collective and No Idea exclusive colors. It wasn’t numbered so I’m not sure how many were made, but there is also test pressings from the 180 gram pressings done at Rainbo. Congratulations.

Book Club: The Replacements "All Over But the Shouting" an oral history

I was hanging out with a good buddy last night and I noticed this book on his book shelf. Another friend had told me that it was a really good read and being a big Replacements fan, it just made sense to borrow this book. I figured if any of you were looking for a good book to read, this post might serve as inspiration. While I have heard numerous stories at the chaos that was the Replacements, I am excited to read first hand accounts and interviews about the legendary Minneapolis band. I always find that reading about your favorite bands somehow makes the albums that much better to listen to. If anyone starts reading this or has read this, please feel free to post your thoughts.

And as has been done before, what is everyone reading? Any recommends for our imaginary book club?

“All Over But the Shouting” is available at Amazon and I’m sure wherever books are sold.

Vinyl Collective Marketplace launched (created by Limited Pressing) / Start Selling Your Goods

Vinyl Collective Marketplace

Video tutorial on how to use the Vinyl Collective Marketplace

We are so excited to announce the soft launch of the Vinyl Collective Marketplace. Before shutting down our online store, we had offered a Used Vinyl section where anyone could sell their records alongside the other records we had available for sale. When we decided to shut down our online store, we thought about the possibility of setting up a Marketplace where anyone could sell pretty much anything. I recognized the problems with the Used Vinyl Store we had set up which all revolved around a really poorly planned way of uploading items, sending out statements, and handling used sales’ payments. We talked to our friends at LimitedPressing.com and told them what we were hoping to put together. The good folks at Limited Pressing did such an amazing job putting together the Vinyl Collective Marketplace and we hope you will consider selling your records and other items here. Here are some of the things you can do with the Vinyl Collective Marketplace:

  • Create product listings where you can post product info, price, and upload images. You can also set the shipping prices to each territory where you are shipping to.
  • Once you set up your account with your paypal address, you get paid immediately for the records sold to your paypal account. This is important because a. you get paid immediately and b. if the buyer has a problem with the seller, they can work directly with the seller to resolve any possible issues.
  • Vinyl Collective and Limited Pressing do not take a percentage for your sales in our marketplace. Paypal takes their usual fees, but you won’t pay anything to list or sell your items otherwise. This might change in the future, but for the foreseeable future, you won’t pay any fees other than the fees Paypal take out.

It really doesn’t get more simple than this to list and sell your items. For our marketplace, we didn’t want to limit items to just vinyl because we figured some of you vinyl collectors might have CDs collecting dust that you want to sell to raise money to buy more records. Same goes for books, posters, t-shirts, and more. We figured that when you sell your items to record stores, you don’t typically get a good deal. With the Vinyl Collective Marketplace, you get whatever price you set.

Labels, I highly recommend you listing your items, too. List new records, list test pressings, list posters, or what have you; consider this another option to raise funds to press new releases.

I have listed a handful of records, CDs, and a Cassette, but I plan to list a lot more soon. I highly recommend you check it out and start selling your goods.

Thanks Limited Pressing. You guys are seriously the greatest group of guys. The Marketplace looks amazing and works so well. Everyone not hip to Limited Pressing, make sure you visit their site and start an account.

Kickstarter: Help Fund EXPLOSIVO!- "…If The Devil Had a Guitar" LP

Our friends at Dead Broke recently set up a Kickstarter project to help fund Explosivo!’s “…If the Devil Had a Guitar”. Here is what they had to say about the record:

This is a project to raise money to release one of Long Island’s most important & most unheard DIY punk records, EXPLOSIVO’s, long lost full-length LP, “…If The Devil Had a Guitar”. This album was recorded at Creep Records studios sometime in the late 90′s and a physical release has never seen the light of the day. This album has been passed around Long Island (and all over) by word of mouth, and friends making copies on cdr and tape. Explosivo! featured dudes who went on to play in bands such as: THE DEVIL HIMSELF, IRON CHIC, SMALL ARMS DEALER & more. A melodic assault of DIY pop/punk/rock that still holds up to be one of Long Island’s best kept secrets… Coming soon on Dead Broke / One Eleven Records.

Listen to EXPLOSIVO here.

With 63 days to go, Dead Broke needs only $305 to reach their goal of $1200. You can find out more info on the offers available through the Kickstarter page. Good luck Dead Broke.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Doug Wurzer

Today we bring you Doug Wurzer, our vinyl collector of the day. Doug lives in Calgary and has amassed quite the record collection. In addition to collecting, he runs the hardcore vinyl collecting blog, We Will Bury You. Doug took the time to answer our questions about why he collects vinyl, his thoughts on variants, his most prized possession, records he would kill to own, the most he ever spent for a record, and more. That last question (the most he ever spent for a record), I am pretty certain that Doug’s answer is the most I have ever heard someone spending on a record. Thanks Doug for taking the time to answer our questions.

You, too, can answer our questions and submit them for a future Vinyl Collector of the Day feature. You can find the questions here.

Help get BRANDTSON – "Send Us A Signal" Vinyl LP Pressed (11 days/$367 remaining)

Our friends at Dreamover records recently set up a kickstarter project to fund the pressing of Brandston’s “Send us a Signal” on vinyl. They are getting really close to funding their project. With only 11 days left, they only need $367 to get the project funded. While the really high ticket items are sold out, what I recommend doing is getting the Kickstarter only variant where everyone who funds this color will get a copy on this exclusive color (no other folks will get this color). However many people fund the kickstarter variant part of the pledge, that is how many copies will be pressed. The cost to do this is $17 which is a pretty damn fine deal considering only 50 or so copies will be pressed. If you just want to get a copy of the record and don’t want to be bothered with colored vinyl, they are offering for $7 a copy on black. You really can’t beat that.

Good luck Dreamover. Everyone, please consider funding this project, it is a really great record and is so damned close to get funded.

Find out more info here.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Karl Aurand

Today, we bring you our vinyl collector of the day, Karl Aurand. Karl took the time to share with us his thoughts on collecting vinyl, colored variants, his most prized records, out of print records he would kill to own, records he would love to see pressed, and more. Thanks Karl for taking the time to answer our questions.

If you haven’t sent us your Vinyl Collector of the Day submission, what are you waiting for? You can find the questions at this link. Just email your answers along with a photo to me.

Please click the link to find out more about Karl.

VC: Your name and the city you live in.
My name is Karl Aurand and I live in Tucson, AZ.

VC: Do you catalog your records online? Where are they? Are you on the VC Message board? What is your username?
I catalog my records on Dead Format, the URL is http://www.deadformat.net/tradelist/Karl. I’m also on tthe VC message board, my user name is karlvsdauniverse.

VC: How many records do you own?
I own about 175 records.

VC: Why do you collect vinyl?
I think it’s fun and I enjoy the challenge of finding rare records from bands I Iike. Records are also more meaningful, personal, and have more value.

VC: What was the first record you remember purchasing with your own money?
The first record I bought with my own money was American Nightmare’s 4 Song Demo. I bought it at a Trash Talk show on Super Bowl Sunday in 2007.

VC: What is your most prized record in your collection?
The most prized record in my collection would be my first press of Lifetime’s Jersey’s Best Dancers on grey. My parents gave it to me for Christmas last year, I had been looking for it forever and was so happy they found it and got it for me. Not only is Jersey’s Best Dancers one of my all-time favorite albums but only 100 copies were pressed on that color. It’s such an awesome feeling knowing that only 99 other people in the world have one too!

VC: What release would you like to see come out on vinyl that hasn’t yet been released?
Ben Nichol’s The Last Pale Light in the West, the last three Cartel albums, all of the Avett Brothers’ albums that have not been pressed yet, and AA Bondy’s American Hearts would be awesome.

VC: What is the most you have spent for a record?
The most I ever spent on a record was $100 for New Found Glory’s From the Screen to Your Stereo on red. I took the buy it now on eBay the second I saw it because that was the only time I had ever seen it in the three years I had been collecting records. Someone in the UK listed it on eBay a few weeks ago and it went for over $200, so I definitely lucked out on mine.

VC: What has been your greatest vinyl score (least amount of money spent for a valued record)
My greatest vinyl score was my original press of Jawbreaker’s 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. I placed a bid on it for $12 in the last 3 hours and ended up winning it, I couldn’t believe it!

VC: What out of print record would you kill to own?
I would kill to own a first press of Jawbreaker’s Unfun on clear and Brand New’s Your Favorite Weapon on white.

VC: What are your thoughts on color variants? Do you collect any artists in particular?
I really like color variants, I think it adds a lot more excitement to collecting records. It’s fun to try to find the rarer colors to complete a collection or just to have. If I could easily buy every record I wanted, collecting wouldn’t be fun. The only time I don’t like color variants is if there’s a lot of colors. For example, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me vinyl is such a nightmare because there are so many colors from different websites. It’s cool and all that basically everyone that wants that on vinyl will get it, but it’s kind of ridiculous at the same time. I also don’t like when there are a million pressings of the same record and they’re all on limited color vinyl. For example, No Idea seems to press the same record over and over again and on different colors each time. It’s cool that not all of the represses are on black, but it makes it kind of impossible for someone to collect every color because there are so many.

VC: Do you sell or trade records?
Lately I have been putting a lot of my records that I don’t listen to or like on eBay or selling them on Dead Format. I’m kind of more into getting full collections from bands I really like rather than having a lot of odds and ends from bands I kind of like.

VC: Do you have any good record stores in your home town? Which ones do you frequent?
We have Zia Records, which is cool because you can find records you want and not have to pay for shipping. We also have a record store called Toxic Ranch. Although I have never found anything too cool besides some Bouncing Souls and Chain of Strength records, one of my friends found Chesterfield KIng there!

VC: Your last 5 records that you purchased?
Bayside- The Walking Wounded, on clear
Weekend- Nachos Bleed, on white
Brand New- The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, on gold
Dangers- Anger, on grey
The Wonder Years and Fallen From the Sky split, on brown
