Today, we bring you day 4 of our features of the good folks at the Independent Label Collective. A Little background: Talia recently became a part of the ILC in taking over the new PR venture of the company. She is very active within the local music scene doing everything from helping local labels to pioneering a program in town of teaching kids with limited resources to play music. She is also is part of the all-girl DJ group in town known as Cherry Bomb with fellow ILCer Tracy Wilson. She also has an awesome dog named Sneakers who is becoming a favorite around the office.

Talia was kind enough to answer our questions on why she collects vinyl, her first vinyl purchase, her thoughts on colored vinyl, and more.

Starting Monday, we will resume featuring new submissions to our Vinyl Collector of the Day. Get your answers in by answering questions featured at this link.

VC: Your name and the city you live in.
Talia Miller, Richmond, VA

VC: Do you catalog your records online? Where are they? Are you on the VC Message board? What is your username?
I do not catalog them online. I actually just joined the VC message board the other day, username is taliaILC

VC: How many records do you own?
Probably around 500-600

VC: Why do you collect vinyl?
I like the way it sounds, and there’s something super satisfying about actually holding a record, or putting it on the turntable that’s unlike any other medium that music comes on. Also, I really like the hunt for specific records!

VC: What was the first record you remember purchasing with your own money?
X-Ray Specs, Germ Free Adolescence

VC: What is your most prized record in your collection?
I have the first two Bikini Kill EPs, and I’m a not-so-secret gigantic riot grrrl fan, so probably those!

VC: What is the most you have spent for a record?
Not sure, but probably not over $60. The parts of my collection that are nearest and dearest to my heart aren’t necessarily the ones that have the most value to others, but I think it works out better that way for me.

VC: What has been your greatest vinyl score (least amount of money spent for a valued record)?
I have no idea, it terms of monetary value!

VC: What out of print record would you kill to own?
Most things on Sympathy for the Record Industry!

VC: What are your thoughts on color variants? Do you collect any artists in particular?
They’re amazing-looking, but hard as crap to DJ with!

VC: Do you sell or trade records?
Nope!

VC: Do you have any good record stores in your home town? Which ones do you frequent?
Yes! Deep Grove is terrific, and Vinyl Conflict as well. Plan 9 is always good for old 45s.

VC: Your last 5 records that you purchased?
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings – I Learned the Hard Way
The Bloody Hollies – Fire At Will
Sonic Youth – The Eternal
The Ventures – The Cruel Sea 45
Golden Triangles – Double Jointer
