Stephen Zmijewski – THE GET UP KIDS “Simple Science” LP

Congrats Stephen, you are our winner of the Get Up Kids simple science test pressing. We will send it out this week. Thanks everyone else for participating. We actually still have a few copies of Simple Science on blue vinyl; if you want one, email me. You can also pick up the 180 gram black vinyl through Interpunk.

Vinyl Collectors of the Day, Derek Fulmer and Anna Gelzis

Today, we bring you 2 Vinyl Collectors of the Day, Derek Fulmer and Anna Gelzis. We bring you two because Derek and Anna collect records together. The engaged couple met through music and share a common bond with collecting records. I gotta say that this is very cool for me to see. The situation typically finds a male record collector and a disapproving wife/girlfriend/fiance. Derek and Anna are different though; when they travel, they go record collecting together; when they are at home, they are listening to records together. Both Derek and Anna took the time to answer our questions on why they collect vinyl, their most prized records, records they would love to own and see pressed, and their thoughts on collecting variants. They also bring up an interesting question when answering what out of print record they would love to own. Their answer was Operation Ivy’s “Energy” and it begs the question, why hasn’t this been repressed yet. Epitaph reissued it on CD but never reissued it on vinyl.

Thanks Derek and Anna for submitting your vinyl collector of the day feature. I think that your common interest of collecting vinyl will be an inspiration for some couples out there and am certain a number of collectors will show this feature to their significant others saying check out this rad couple. Thanks guys.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Kevin Bradley

Today, we bring you our vinyl collector of the day, Kevin Bradley. Kevin resides in the very great city of Chicago. Kevin took the time to answer our questions on collecting variants, out of print records he would kill to own, a record he would love to see pressed, and his favorite local record store. He also brings up a really interesting way to add great records to your collection. He frequents flea markets and gets their before other collectors get their to get his pick of 60s and 70s records. I love flea markets and grew up going to them and have definitely picked up some great records as a result.

Thanks Kevin for taking the time to answer our questions. Please click the link to read Kevin’s feature.

And if you haven’t sent us your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature, what are you waiting for? Answer these questions.

Show and Tell – Stephen Abbots' Vinyl Inspired Wedding Items

Groom’s cake (Fucking awesome nod to the Descendents)

Wedding Favor Bowls (how stoked would you be to take this home, sure beats the hell out of most of the favors I have received)

Pretty sweet Menu for the Wedding

Longtime supporter, Stephen Abbots from the UK, recently sent me these photos of items from his wedding. First of all, Congratulations buddy. I hope everything went perfectly. And I hope losing your virginity was all that you had hoped it would be (just kidding, or maybe I’m not). I have to say that if these photos are any indication of the time spent on making the wedding awesome, I have not doubt everything was amazing.

While I did not get Stephen’s approval to post this in the first of what will hopefully be a long running series of posts called “Show and Tell”, I figured he would give me his blessing. I would want the world to see the end results of all the hard work. My idea for future show and tell’s is send us some photos and tell us a story. Do you have a complete Get Up Kids’ vinyl collection? Send us the photos and tell us a little bit about your collection. Take a photo of you with your most expensive record in your collection and tell us a bit about it. I will from time to time ask for more focused “Show and Tell”‘s but you get the idea.

Here is what Stephen had to say about the photos:
My wedding is this Saturday and I thought you might dig some of the record related stuff I’ve managed to fit into it. Attached are pictures of the menus and wedding favour bowls made out of cheap second hand 7″s and also there’s a pic of my grooms cake parodying one of my favourite albums (I understand a grooms cake is a tradition in some parts of America, we don’t normally have them in the UK but I read about them and thought why not, more cake is always a plus).

Pint Glass/Shirts Clearance Sale (Look Mexico,Tim Barry,Micah Schabel,Craft Beer)

While we had hoped that Interpunk could carry Suburban Home’s pint glasses and coffee mugs, we just didn’t like the idea of shipping cases of pint glasses to Virginia for fear of having them all get damaged. Because of this, we have around 400 pint glasses sitting in a storage space collecting dust and that too doesn’t sit right with me. We also have some recent shirts sitting around collecting dust. We’d like to offer you a deal on these items so that instead of collecting dust, the pint glasses and shirts are being enjoyed. Pint Glasses are $5.00 each, T-shirts are $10.00 each. If you live in the United States, we will offer you FREE SHIPPING if you order 4 or more pint glasses.

Here is how the offer works:

  1. Email me with the subject “PINT GLASS / T-SHIRT CLEARANCE SALE”
  2. In the body of the email, list the items you would like to purchase along with which Country you live in.
  3. I will then send you a paypal money request including shipping costs for the items we have available.
  4. Pay the money request and I will send you the Pint Glasses and/or shirts.
  5. While supplies last, I will throw in some FREE beer coozies.

Hopefully this offer isn’t too confusing. The pint glasses will be the envy of your guests

Vinyl Collector of the Day, CJ Marsicano

Today, we bring you our vinyl collector of the day, CJ Marsicano. What I enjoy most about these features are the stories that come out of them. Whether its a story about how someone got into collecting vinyl or a story involving getting that white whale of records, I always enjoy the respective story. While CJ took the time to answer our questions, he mentions a rather funny story about his wife’s disbelief over what she thought he was shopping for. CJ also answered our questions about why he collects vinyl, his most prized records, records he would love to see pressed, and his recent purchases. Thanks CJ for taking the time to answer our questions.

Please click the below link to read on. And please send me your Vinyl Collector of the Day submissions. You can find the questions here.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Joey Flispart

Today, we bring you our vinyl collector of the day, Joey Flispart. Joey reminds us that so many of us owe our love of collecting vinyl to a particular band. I think that lots of people owe their collections to bands like NOFX and Against Me, but in Joey’s case, he first picked up vinyl by Saves the Day. The rest (as they say) is history. Read on as Joey explains why he collects vinyl, his most prized records, what he would like to see pressed, what out of print record he would kill to own, his recent purchases, and more.

Thanks Joey for taking the time to answer our questions. If you are interested in submitting your own Collector of the Day feature, just answer the questions at this link.

Photo was taken at this year’s Record Store Day.

My Vinyl Setup – Jim Nieves

Jim Nieves, Vinyl Collector of the Day on June 3rd has offered to help me out with a new feature to Vinyl Collective, “My Vinyl Setup”. I figured this might be a great way to share with others how people are setting up their collections and their room for record playing. Jim has offered to have the first post in this new series of posts. You, too, can submit your vinyl set up by sending photos and commentary to me. Please try to keep the image sizes under 1,000 pixels wide (recommended is around 600 pixels wide, 72 dpi).

Here are a few comments from Jim; thanks Jim:

As with most married men, I have been exiled to the basement but it works pretty well for me. As you can see, my LP collection rooms with my guitar gear as well as my digital work station. I like to rip my vinyl to DVD-Audio and FLAC for best audio fidelity and I also record my guitar tracks down here as well. My wife wonders why I spend all my time in the basement. As much as I try to explain, she’ll never understand.

Notice my GE Wildcat portable turntable in some of the photos. I really love that thing. I bring it upstairs along with a crate of vinyl when we have friends over – instant joy for everyone. I have a real sweet spot for that thing – I picked it up on eBay several years ago $10 plus shipping. I had to replace the stylus but was mint otherwise.
