Vinyl Collector of the Day, Akihiro (from Eagle Beaver Records)

Today, we bring you Akihiro from Eagle Beaver, our vinyl collector of the day. Akihiro calls Japan home which makes him our first collector of the day from Japan. In addition to being an avid collector, Akihiro runs Eagle Beaver Records, a small label and mailorder. Japan is such an incredible country, I feel very fortunate to have been able to travel over there a few times over the years by going on past tours with the Gamits. The record stores are incredible (especially the used vinyl). While I find Akihiro’s feature interesting for a number of reasons, I find it incredible that he has room to store 3500 records. So many Japanese live in quarters equal to or a little bit smaller than that of a dorm room so having that may records must take up over half of his house. Akihiro took the time to answer our questions on why he collects vinyl, his thoughts on colored vinyl, his most prized record, records he would kill to own, greatest vinyl score and more. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

You, too, can answer our questions and submit your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature. What are you waiting for? You can find the questions here.

Austin Lucas show review, podcast, collection vinyl, and new song on mix tape #5

Last week, Austin Lucas came through Denver on his tour with Cory Branan. The show was one of those really incredible shows that reminds you of why you stay out so late on a school night and end up drinking a few too many beers. Cory Branan who played right before Austin was fantastic as always (even though he was super dead from pulling an all nighter the night before in Vegas). While I always love seeing Cory, I have to say that Austin Lucas was absolutely on point and the night was all his.

The photo you see above is one of many that Tiffiny Kallina from The Ruckus took. She also did a show review to accompany the photos and will soon be publishing an interview with Austin Lucas. You can see the show review and photos here.

Our friends at Punknews have started to do a podcast. While I haven’t yet listened to it (will do so shortly), the podcast features music by Austin Lucas, My Heart to Joy, Comadre, Coliseum, along with commentary by Bryne Yancy, Adam White, and Richard Verducci (Punknews writers). Stream or Download their podcast here.

Those of you waiting for the vinyl release of “Collection”, your wait will soon be over. I am planning to have the vinyl done in time for Suburban Home Records’s 15th Anniversary. Expect a special exclusive color available only to people who attend our 15th Anniversary. News will be posted soon.

And if you haven’t yet downloaded our latest mix tape, Suburban Home Records Mix Tape #5, you have to download it for the Austin Lucas demo of “Sleep Well”, a song that Austin has been playing out on the road and a song that absolutely owns. Download the mix at this link.

If you follow our newsletter, you probably read that Austin Lucas ended his set in Denver by doing an A cappella version of Boyz II Men’s It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye. It was amazing. Don’t be surprised if some time from now, I convince Austin Lucas to put out an ep of covers of old hip hop and R&b tunes.

Fake Problems – Real Ghosts Caught On Tape LP (Exclusive Hot Pink)

Fake Problems – Real Ghosts Caught On Tape LP (Exclusive Hot Pink) [shop radio cast]

Our friends at Shop Radio Cast continue to secure really great exclusive vinyl. This time around, they are offering an exclusive color (hot pink) for Fake Problems’ upcoming album. At only 150 copies being offered, this will go out of print soon. I love this band and am dying to hear this new album. Still bummed that they had to cancel their tour with Ninja Gun a while back.

Know that we are talking to our buds at Side One Dummy about doing some kind of test pressing contest for this upcoming album. Stay tuned.

Book Your Hotel for Suburban Home Records' 15th Anniversary weekend

Book TownPlace Suites Denver for Suburban Home Records’ 15th Anniversary [special rate]

I just got the discount code for what is probably the closest hotel to 3 Kings Tavern where most of the festivities will occur during Suburban Home Records’ 15th Anniversary weekend. 3 Kings Tavern is on 60 south broadway which is a few blocks south of 1st and Broadway. The hotel is pretty much at 6th and broadway. It’s a pretty good walk, but the cab fare is only like $6.00. I think the rate might be a little more than last year, but at $69 per night, it isn’t a bad deal (Considering what you get: a Queen Bed, a Sofa Bed, a Kitchen, a desk and free wifi, and plenty of room to hang out). A number of you stayed here last year and it seemed to me that most people were stoked on the lodging.

I highly recommend you book a room now as you won’t have to pay for the room until you checkout. The prices are good from September 9th through September 13th in case you come in early or stay late. There are only like a dozen rooms blocked out so far so act fast. If all the rooms get booked, I think I can get more rooms but it will depend on availability. Book now though so you don’t miss out on this good deal.

If you are out of town and plan on coming to our 15th anniversary weekend, please post a comment on where you are traveling from and if you have already purchased your plane ticket.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Adam Pfleider

Today, we bring you our vinyl collector of the day, Adam Pfleider. Adam resides in Austin, Texas; he writes for Absolutepunk.net and has helped by featuring Look Mexico and yours truly within the pages of frequently visited music site. Adam took the time to answer our questions about why he collects vinyl, his first ever vinyl purchase, records he would do bad things to own, his great vinyl score, the most he has paid for a record, and more. Adam, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

You, too, can answer our questions and submit your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature. What are you waiting for? You can find the questions here.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Jeff Pritchard

Jeff Pritchard is our vinyl collector of the day. Jeff is an example of someone who hasn’t been collecting as long as others, but he still has an interesting story. With a collection under 100 records, Jeff’s answers are just as interesting to me as those of collectors who have thousands of records. I really hope this feature inspires others with smaller collections to send in their answers. Jeff took the time to answer our questions on why he collects vinyl, thoughts on trading/selling, thoughts on colored vinyl, his most prized records, his greatest score, and more. Thanks Jeff for taking the time to answer our questions.

You, too, can answer our questions and submit your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature. What are you waiting for? You can find the questions here.

One thing everyone, I really like it when people send photos of themselves with their records. I would love to encourage more photos like that but if you want to send in your photos of just your records, send in 2 photos.

1,000 LPs,Full Color Jackets/Labels, All Set Up, only $2399 through Record Pressing

Not sure if you subscribe to the RecordPressing.com email list, but late last night, they posted their July newsletter and in it is a deal worth looking at. For $2,399 ($2.40 per finished record), you get 1,000 LPs (I assume on black vinyl) shrinkwrapped in full color jackets with full color labels. This price includes all the set up charges (mastering, plating, etc). While this offer isn’t posted on their website, their other specials offer slight upcharges for colored vinyl and I’m sure the same would apply for inserts, download cards, etc.

But even with the additional charges for colored vinyl and other extras, this is a pretty damned good price. Not sure if you know, but Record Pressing is pressing vinyl in the states now (no longer working through GZ in the Czech Republic). We have used them on the Jon Snodgrass / Cory Branan split and on the Wayword Sons/Sam Lowry split. We have a few other jobs in the works with them.

If you know of a killer special at any pressing plant, let me know. I will post it. And soon (I promise), I will be doing an in depth, on going feature on pressing costs and things you can do to cut your prices on vinyl without losing out on quality.

Look Mexico "To Bed to Battle" featured Band of the Week on Insound

I just noticed this mentioned on our message board, but for the first time in Suburban Home’s history, one of our artists is the Featured Band of the Week on Insound. The feature explains that “To Bed to Battle” deserves a lot more recognition than it has received (we could not agree more), and that they bridge the gap between 90′s Midwestern emo like Get Up Kids and Braid but put their own spin on it (we agree!). Read the write up on Insound here. Thanks Meghan.

Like I mentioned just one post earlier, you really need to listen to this album. Do so for free and honestly, it could not be any easier. Just click this link. Then drag the Look Mexico record cover into our player.
