Vinyl Collector of the Day, Ryan Canavan (Hex Records)

Today, we bring you our Vinyl Collector of the Day, Ryan Canavan. Ryan runs Hex Records out of Syracuse. For those unfamiliar, Ryan has been putting out records for years, most recently he has released a 7″ for Lemuria, as well as records by End of a Year, Oak and Bone, Like Wolves, and the Helm. Ryan was kind enough to answer our questions about why he collects vinyl, his first record purchases (at Kmart), records he would love to own, his thoughts on colored vinyl, his most prized records, greatest scores, and more. Thanks Ryan for taking the time to answer our questions.

You, too, can answer our questions and submit your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature. What are you waiting for? You can find the questions here.

Drag the River "Closed" LP Pre-order Announced

That’s right my friends, the long overdue vinyl pressing of Drag the River’s Closed is in production right now. I’m not really sure why it took us this long to put the album on vinyl, but it is happening. As a matter of fact, I received the test pressings late last week and the test pressings are approved. Because of this, I have decided to post the pre-order for this record on Thursday, August 19th. The 1,000 piece pressing will be pressed on 3 colors:

150 on Whiskey Coke colored vinyl (special 15th Anniversary color)
400 on Gold vinyl
450 on Black vinyl (all future pressing will be on black vinyl)

I originally planned to press a number of our records and repressed records on Whiskey Coke colored vinyl for our 15th Anniversary weekend, but being that vinyl always takes forever, we will just offer these special edition records for sale on our website. Expect each that edition to go fast. We think that there is a good chance that the vinyl will be done in time for our 15th Anniversary weekend but you never know.

Depending on the day, this is my favorite Drag the River album. The album features so many great songs like “Medicine”, “Get Drunk”, “Calloused Heart”, “Forgiveness”, and so many more. If you haven’t heard the album in a while, take a listen to this full album stream.

Expect news soon on vinyl pressings of Austin Lucas’ “Collection”, I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In the House’s “The Sounds of Dying”, Bad Astronaut’s “Acrophobe”, This Charming Man’s “Every Little Secret”, Tim Barry’s “Laurel St Demos” (repress), and more.

131 SH/VC Records for Auction at Limited Pressing (starting at 99cents) – Metallica,Mars Volta,Off With Their Heads

131 SH/VC Records for Auction at Limited Pressing (starting at 99cents)

This last week, I dug out some records that have yet to be listed on our weekly auctions. There are some really great records like the Metallica quadruple LP boxset for And Justice for All, found a copy of the Pains at Being Pure at Heart LP on white vinyl, posted the latest Mars Volta dbl LP (as well as another Frances the Mute triple LP), as well as records by Off With Their Heads, Paramore, Dr Dre, Q and Not U, Pixies, Hot Water Music, Hot Snakes, Pelican, Pearl Jam, In the Red, and lots more in addition to the records we have been posting every week.

I can’t say this enough. Take a look at the list 1. because there are over a hundred great records, and 2. lots of the records end at really low prices (some even at the starting price of 99 cents). You can get some great records at great prices and we all know how nice that is with how terrible the economy is.

I will post a reminder before these auctions end on Thursday, but do take take a look.

Submit Your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature, 1 Question changed

While we have received an amazing number of Vinyl Collector of the Day features, there are even more of you out there who continue to put it off. What are you waiting for? I have been getting lots of positive feedback about recognizing a Vinyl Collector every day and I want to encourage all of you who have been considering submitting your answers to do so. Whether you have 100 records or 10,000 records, everyone has a unique story; we want to read them all.

All you have to do is send me an email with answers to the following questions along with a photo of you with your records. Try to keep the file size of the image under 1 MB if you can. I added to the question about cataloging records online and VC Message board, a small part asking about whether or not you are using Limited Pressing; if you think of any questions that should be added to future Collector features, post it in the comments. While we can’t guarantee every submission or every question will be published, we will do our best to try.

Now, take 15 minutes and answer our questions and get someone to snap a photo of you and your collection. Thanks.

Those of you wondering about the beer tour, I am waiting on a quote back from a bus charter company; looks as though we will have a 55 passenger bus, one that we will be able to drink beer on. I think I might keep the breweries to 4 (Wynkoop, Great Divide, Avery, and Oskar Blues) for fear of people getting too drunk. There will be tickets for the spots on the bus as the cost to charter is pretty pricey, but I will do my best to keep that cost as low as possible.

Video: Frank Turner "I Still Believe" (new song) at Surfside 7

Frank Turner played at the Surfside 7 in Ft Collins last night; Andy Thomas opened the show. For those of you not familiar with the venue, the capacity is about 100 people. Since this was his only appearance in Colorado, people drove from all parts of the state to see the show. Having only seen Frank open shows and play for about a half an hour, last night was unbelievable. Frank played for about 2 hours which included songs with Jon Snodgrass (of Drag the River), old songs, stories, shots of whiskey, and this new song which I am calling “I Still Believe”. I have always been a big fan of what Frank does, but last night with 100 super fans singing along and hanging on every word, few shows compare. The audio on the video is kind of quiet, but you get the idea. And Frank, you were pretty drunk (as was I), but I think you said it was cool that I put up this video! That is how I choose to remember the night!

Speaking of Frank Turner and Jon Snodgrass; you might remember their song together, “Big Rock in Little Rock”, well that song and experience inspired talk of recording an album together. That album was recorded yesterday. No news yet on who is putting it out or when, but I will say that I put my name in the hat and if Epitaph isn’t putting it out, maybe I will. That would be amazing.

Enjoy the video. Thanks Frank for one hell of a night.

114 VC/SH Auctions at Limited Pressing, Ending Today (Good Clean Fun,Mars Volta,Funsize,Micah)

114 VC/SH Auctions at Limited Pressing

Each week, I have been listing around 100 records all starting at 99 cents. Some have gone for pretty crazy prices, but lots have ended at very low prices (some have stayed at 99 cents each). If you haven’t checked out my auctions, visit the link above to see the 114 records I have listed right now. This week, I found a handful of 7″s that I have never before listed from acts like Good Clean Fun (their song Victory Records Sucks, so amazing), Modest Mouse, Apocalypse Hoboken, Funsize, Operation Cliff Clavin / Connie Dungs, and lots more. Plus we have tons of records from Mars Volta to Drag the River to Look Mexico to Frank Turner, and everything in between. Take a look.

The auctions will end throughout the day today. Just take a look, I’m sure you will find something interesting.

Ninja Gun "Eight Miles Out" featured on Field and Stream video

While I’ll be the first to admit that it has been decades since I have picked up an issue of Filed and Stream, I have to tell you that it was pretty special for me when Coody (of Ninja Gun) sent me a link to a video on Field and Stream that featured “Eight Miles Out” by Ninja Gun. Little did I know that the cats at Field and Stream like the rock music. The song is featured during a BBQ section of the video at about 3:15. Field and Stream, thanks for putting Ninja Gun in your video; you really need to do a feature on Chuck Ragan though; he is one of the most avid fishermen I know who is out there playing music. And man, what about that video of Jon Snodgrass singing “Catfish Noodling”?

Ninja Gun will soon be embarking on a tour with Murder by Death. You can listen to their album, “Restless Rubes” in our Listening Station.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Nick Moskal

Today, we bring you our Vinyl Collector of the Day, Nick Moskal. Nick lives in Buffalo where he scours the city for its records. It sounds like he attacks the city like a UPS driver tackles their route hitting thrift stores, garage sales, record stores, and more. While every Vinyl Collector of the Day feature is interesting and unique, I think that Nick really took a lot of time to answer our questions and I highly recommend reading his feature. In addition to answering our questions about why he collects vinyl, his greatest vinyl scores, his thoughts on colored vinyl, his favorite local record stores, records he would love to see pressed, and more, he brings up a couple of interesting points. One, he mentions that when he stores his records, he always leaves a few cubbies open for newer releases which I think is a great idea. Before filing them away in their respective spaces, you have easy access to those records so you can play the hell out of them. He also discusses hanging out over entire summers at his favorite record store and wishing he could shop their one more time. Thanks Nick for taking the time to answer our questions.

You, too, can answer our questions and submit your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature. What are you waiting for? You can find the questions here.
