I’m happy to bring you our January Record Store of the Month, Magic Bullet Records & Skateboards. You no doubt are familiar with the name Magic Bullet Records as they have been releasing incredible records for years from an eclectic variety of artists. Well, late in 2009, Brent Eyestone and his brother Mark decided to make some huge changes when turning Mark’s Skate shop into a Record store and Skateboard shop. It isn’t the first record label to start a retail store, but it is one of the only Record Store/Skate shops I know of. I am sure that this idea can be taken into other communities.

I hope that this interview inspires you to think about starting your own retail outlet in your community. Brent has a great insight on how he wanted to run his store based off of his years of experience. He discusses how the store came to be, how he runs his store differently than other record stores, and what they do to invest in there customers. They work harder on the interaction with customers than the transaction and you have to respect that. If you run a label and have though about starting up a store, read this interview. You might find yourself considering reaching out to your local skate shops and see if they might be receptive to doing something similar. I am sure most skate shops are struggling and joining forces makes it easier for both entities to do something positive.

Thanks Brent for taking the time to do this interview. I wish you guys the best of luck in 2010. The shop’s Facebook page (has the address, hours, phone #, etc. etc.).

mikejones

I’d like to welcome Mike Jones as our December Suburban Home Buddy of the Month. Each month we select someone we recognize as a big supporter of what we do and this month, Mike topped our short list. And after reading his interview, I can only hope other folks have similar experiences with our small, independent label. Mike started out a fan of Drag the River and was later showed Tim Barry by a friend. At some point, he saw that both records were put out by the same label and at that point started finding out more about our releases. In an era when people don’t consider what label a record is on like they used to, it is nice to see that some people still do.

I encourage you to read on as Mike explains his introduction into Suburban Home, his favorite SH and non-SH artists, a band we should consider putting on Suburban Home, and suggestions on what we can do. Thanks Mike for all the support and thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.

I’d like to welcome Jeff Smith as our December 2009 Vinyl Collector of the Month. Jeff has been a big supporter of Vinyl Collective buying lots of records from us over the years; additionally, he has become quite an avid seller of Used Vinyl through Vinyl Collective’s Used Vinyl Sales. I have to say that this has been my favorite interview, not because any of the previous installments were lacking but because Jeff’s record collecting comes from a completely different angle than a majority of the collectors who shop at VC. He purchased his first album with his own money in 1967, that record was Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced”. I would venture to guess that this first purchase predates most of the births of most of our collectors. I highly recommend that you read on as Jeff discusses his thoughts on why he collects vinyl, his thoughts on variants, records he would kill to own or would love to see pressed, and lots more.

Thanks Jeff for taking the time to answer our questions and thanks so much for supporting what we do.

Brandon Proff submitted this month’s Beer of the Month, enjoy:

It’s been a while since we have done a Beer of the Month post, which I find humorous considering all the awesome beer-centric activities Suburban Home has been taking part in since then.

In September, Virgil and I along with a hand full of SH pals went to the Great American Beer Festival at the convention center here in Denver. Suffice it to say, this yearly event is worth every penny. There were over 2,000 beers to try out, some of which are extremely hard to find either geographically or because the brewery makes a very small amount seasonally. No one could ever get through even half of the beers available in 3 nights let alone one, so we tried our best to hit the breweries who we had either previously experienced something great of theirs or had heard of something special that we had to try.

I can’t for the life of me remember all of the beers we tried, but some of the highlights of the night for me came from breweries like Bull & Bush, Pizza Port, Jolly Pumpkin, Dogfish Head, McCoys, Deschutes, Oskar Blues, Upslope, and the list goes on and on and on. I highly recommend any of those breweries if you happen to be near them or can find their beer in your area.

In October we did a crazy 1 day / 9 stop Brewery tour in celebration of Chad Price’s recent album release. Chad was a trooper and successfully played sets at Odell, Avery, Upslope, Oskar Blues, Great Divide, Breckenridge, Road 34, and Left Hand. In spite of a few minor hiccups everyone was incredibly accommodating and we had an great time, which brings us to our beer of the month:

Odell’s Bourbon Barrel Sout

I stumbled on this 750 ml bottle one night in Boulder and quickly grabbed one as I am a nerd when it comes to all things Imperial. I know there’s a lot of hullabaloo about the validity of the Imperial title when it comes to beer styles but personally think that’s all petty for the most part until someone who knows what they’re talking about explains it all to me. I’ll embrace it for now.

Odell’s site says “This limited edition offering begins with a full-bodied imperial stout that has notes of sweet milk chocolate, smooth vanilla and roasted coffee beans… We transfer it to Kentucky bourbon barrels where it’s aged for four months to let traces of oak and caramel come forward. The bourbon barrels have a remarkable effect on the beer. In turn, the beer has a remarkable effect on the senses.”

If you have ever tried an Imperial stout, you know that they tend to be roasted, bitter, and have an alcohol burn. The spectrum of aroma and flavor variations is huge for this style of beer. Odell’s take is fantastic because they didn’t let the ABV get out of control like some of my other favorite imperials like Three Floyd’s Dark Lord or Goose Island’s Bourbon County stout. The 10.5% is incredibly well hidden by the chocolate and coffee flavors and aromas. The bourbon aging makes it silky smooth. It’s dangerously good and anyone enjoying an entire bottle by themselves should be prepared to get cozy, as you’re going to want to take a nap afterwards.

Bourbon Barrel Stout is available now wherever Odell beer is sold. GET SOME!

VCCOTMpicallison

Yesterday, I had mentioned that it was recently suggested that we consider 2 female vinyl collectors for our next Vinyl Collector of the Month. We decided to have 2 November Vinyl Collectors of the Month. Yesterday, we posted Nicole Carter’s VCCOTM feature and today, we are proud to bring you Allison Frank, November’s Vinyl Collector of the Month. Oddly both Allison and Nicole live in Pennsylvania about 2 hours apart from each other.

Please read on as Allison discusses why she collects vinyl, what albums she would love to see come out on vinyl, what record she would kill to own, her most prized record, the most she ever spent on a record, and more. Thanks Allison for taking the time to answer our questions and Congratulations on being our November Vinyl Collector of the Month.

Nicole and Allison, If you don’t mind chiming in on the message board, why do you think there is such a disparity between female vinyl collectors and male collectors? I would be curious to see your thoughts on this.

Please click the link to read further.
