Our friend, Aaron, at Team Science recently announced a repress of The Swellers “My Everest” LP. The pressing is on blue vinyl and the pressing is out of an edition of 200 copies. We have 35 that he is allowing us to sell. It’s a great record from a great bunch of guys who are finally seeing their hard work pay off. We at VC are all big Swellers fans.

Whether you buy them directly from Team Science or from us, get them soon. I don’t expect them to last long. The vinyl should arrive in about 2 weeks.

We just got an email from our buddies at Southern Lord to offer colored vinyl for the latest Pelican album, “What We All Come to Need”. The double LP contains 3 exclusive bonus tracks not available on the cd! Live versions of “the Creeper” and “An Inch Above Sand” and a demo version of “What We All Come To Need”.

The way that I understand it, this release has been pressed on clear with black splatter which was only available to Southern Lord subscribers. The way that it was explained to me is that the Red vinyl we are offering is the same color you can get from the Southern Lord store, but it will only be available from them and VC. The copies you find elsewhere are more than likely on black vinyl.

We expect copies as early as next week.

No one can dispute that Frank Turner is having a breakout year. Over the course of the past year, Frank has done about all an artist can do to find new fans and his music is resonating with more and more people. He definitely deserves all that is coming his way.

This UK 7″ split features a live version of Long Live the Queen. We did a trade with our friends at Banquet and have 50 copies on their way to us now. If you want one at a pretty good price (considering it is a UK import), get one through us. I expect this record will sell out sooner than later.

‘Long Live the Queen’ live was recorded at his sold out Shepherds Bush show and features on the forthcoming DVD/CD package ‘Take To The Road’.

Crazy Arm’s ‘Still To Keep’ is the third single to be taken from their excellent debut album, 2009’s ‘Born To Ruin’. The band join Frank on his tour which includes a sold out show at The Roundhouse!

LOOK MEXICO ìTo Bed to Battleî LP Deluxe Set

Today, we bring you the pre-order for Look Mexico’s upcoming album and debut for Suburban Home, “To Bed to Battle”. Many of you have witnessed Look Mexico’s journey throughout the past few years and are excited about this new album. For some of you, this might be the first you have ever heard of Look Mexico. Whichever side of the fence you are on, I really hope that you will spend a little time with a band we still can’t believe we are working with. Look Mexico were one of the first bands (along with Fake Problems) to contribute to our Under the Influence 7″ series. Their track, a cover of Looking Glass’ “Brandy, You’re a Fine Girl” was a spot on cover that really showed the band’s musical chops. Shortly after, they released the “Gasp Asp” 7″ for Tine Engine and those tracks just blew me away. I had always been a fan, but those 2 releases gave me a glimpse into what the band might be capable of on their next album. Luckily, we found out that their next recording effort would be their greatest material to date finding the banding growing and maturing to forge their own distinct style. “To Bed to Battle” is a masterpiece and I can’t wait for all to hear the album Look Mexico have been working so hard to put out.

The album will be pressed on LP, CD, available digitally, and available as a deluxe set with LP, CD, Poster, Pint Glass, T-shirt, Coozie, and Button. The vinyl will be pressed in an edition of 1,000 copies (500 on Salmon/Orange vinyl, 500 on black vinyl). After the first pressing sells out, we will press all future pressings on black vinyl.

To Bed To Battle was written and recorded this past summer in Look
Mexico’s former hometown of Tallahassee, FL. With the converted
basement of a local pizza shop dedicated as their studio space, the
band was able to take their time throughout the recording process,
experimenting with and expanding their sound, and adding new
instrumentation such as electric piano, organ, pedal steel, violin, cello,
and horns. The resulting album – which deals with struggle and
pressing on in the face of adversity – is an incredibly catchy, diverse
yet cohesive set of 10 songs. To Bed To Battle ranges musically from
anthemic pop/rock and explosive ballads (“You Stay. I Go. No
Following,” “Until The Lights Burn Out?”), to alternately edgy and
dreamy math-rock (“No Wonder I’m Still Awake,” “Time For You To
Go Do Your Own Thing”), to blistering, barreling modern rock (“I Live
My Life A Quarter Mile At A Time,” “They Offered Me A Deal (I Said
No, Naturally”), to even acoustic, chamber pop-laced Americana
(“Take It Upstairs, Einstein”).

We had originally posted this pre-order on November 23rd, 2009, and because of a number of issues, the record still has not been shipped. I got some good news this week when our distributor said they would be receiving copies next week (their copies would ship from Canada this week). If that indeed does happen, we could have copies as soon as late next week, but more likely early the week after.

For our 3rd volume of the Suburban Home Records’ Mix Tape, we decided to change up the way that we put together our first 2 mix tapes. This time around, we asked Look Mexico to pick a mix tape of songs that would give people a pretty good idea of what they listen to. The guys (all 5 of them) picked 3 songs each and Matt sequenced the songs so they would flow just right (he has proclaimed himself as a bit of a Mix Tape master). The 15 track mix tape is preceded by 5 Suburban Home tracks (2 Look Mexico tracks start out the mix tape, then a track from the upcoming Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground album, “Introducing”, then the opening track from Lizzie Huffman’s debut 10″, and the final Suburban Home track is the lead track from “Songs in the Keys of F and U”, Stereotyperider’s final album, only because we think that all Look Mexico fans should hear their music). The 20 track mix tape clocks in at over 78 minutes.

I have opted not to post the mix tape’s track listing but know that if you are a fan of Look Mexico, you will find bands that you love and am sure you will discover at least a few surprises along the way. I have been listening to the mix tape for weeks.

The mix tape cover/jacket features a photo of Look Mexico digitized by our own Brandon Proff. The liner notes contain an interview with Look Mexico where they answer questions about their new album, “To Bed to Battle”, the music industry, their recent move to Austin, Texas, and why they do what they do.

As with other mix tapes, this mix tape is extremely limited. When you order 1, you will actually receive 5 mix tapes with the hope that you keep 1 and give 4 to friends. We believe that music is meant to be shared. If you hear an artist that you like, please consider finding their releases and see if they are touring through a town near you. The mix tapes are FREE, but we ask that you please cover shipping costs.

We recommend waiting around for the Look Mexico pre-order which will be posted at 2pm MST.

Flex Your Head was first released in January 1982 and was the first full-length album released by Dischord Records. The compilation features 32 songs by 11 DC area bands and went a long way towards “putting DC on the map” as one of the era’s great punk scenes. This album has remained in print, first on LP and later on CD, and has remained a perennial must-have for each new generation of kids looking to re-trace the roots and ethos of DIY punk. One of the unique features of the album over the years has been its revolving front cover image. The first pressing featured a generic stock cover with a classical music theme chosen from the pressing plant’s catalog. Over the years there have been 4 different covers, the “violin”, the “wheat field”, the “DC Flag” and the “blurry man”. This new edition, which has been re-cut at Chicago Mastering and includes a free MP3 Download coupon, features the DC Flag stars and bars (on a red field), an image so associated with DC punk that many mistake it for a made-up symbol for straight edge. This cover image was also used (on a black field) for an edition of the album briefly pressed in conjunction with Alternative Tentacles in the 80s.

we will have copies next week
