With all this talk of a brand new Cursive album, I just want to continue listening to Domestica and Burst and Bloom, my absolute favorite Cursive records. Don’t get me wrong, I like some of their later albums, but to me, these are the records. When i first heard Domestica, the emotion and the lyrics were just powerful. I probably listened to this album on repeat for 6 months. Shortly after, Burst and Bloom came out which starts with that hip-hop influenced track, Sink to the Beat, which made me realize just how much depth Tim Kasher had as a songwriter. If you think about all the songs Tim has been responsible for between Cursive and the Good Life, it really warps the mind. He is so prolific.

We don’t have this album in stock as it has been out of print for a while now, but I figured this might foster some talk about how badly this album needs to be repressed. Enjoy.

The album, “Domestica” is not currently available in the VC store. We hope they do a repress soon.

The song, “The Martyr” is the 2nd track off of “Domestica”. You can download the song here.

When Dear and the Headlights put out their first album I was shocked by how incredible an album “Small Steps, Heavy Hooves” was considering I am not typically a fan of most of the bands they are putting out these days (save a few). Their sound reminded me of a cross between Bear Vs Shark and Counting Crows, 2 bands on opposite spectrums, but 2 bands that I love. I listened to the first album so much that I got myself so excited about the release of “Drunk Like Bible Times”. My excitement set me up for initial letdown as the album didn’t instantly grab me like I had hoped it would. Luckily, Brandon works in our office and would play the album periodically and over time, I learned to love the album…a lot. Maybe not as much as their debut, but that debut is hard to beat. The mp3 we have posted is one of many great songs on the album.

The album, “Drunk Like Bible Times” is available in the VC store, you can find it here. While you are on our store, make sure you pick up a copy of “Small Steps, Heavy Hooves”, which you can find here. That album is absolutely amazing.

The song, “Talk About” is the 5th track off of “Drunk Like Bible Times”. You can download the song here.

Last night I got some really exciting news. Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground will be touring with MeWithoutYou and The Dear Hunter from June 25th to July 11th. They are coming through Colorado and playing lots of great venues. This could not be more perfect timing as we are re-releasing their S/t album on CD and double LP towards the end of May/early June. When we released this album early last year, I think it really caught people off guard by how amazing it is. The recording is pretty unbelievable as some of the songs has over a hunded tracks. The songs are so well written that I never hesitated giving it comparisons to the Beatles if they had grown up in the Northwest indie rock scene. The album is one of those records that you hear something new every time you listen to it. The band are currently working on new songs (I have 6 absolutely brilliant songs right now) that will make up a new album. I am not sure if we will be putting it out (I really hope so), but regardless, I can’t wait for their new album.

“Hey Momma” is just one small part of a nearly perfect album. I highly recommend everyone give this record a listen and the vinyl’s fidelity sounds better than almost any record I have ever heard.

We have 50 copies remaining of the original pressing of their s/t album. The repress will have a new gatefold jacket with updated art by our own Ralph Eberhard and will see release on CD (the packaging on the CD is out of site, too). If you ever considered picking up the original, now would be the time.

The album, “Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground” is available in the VC store, you can find it here.

The song, “Hey Momma” is the 1st track off of “House With No Name”. You can download the song here.

Ever have one of those Mondays where you go into work from a rather relaxing weekend, sit at your desk, and one by one, things continue to go wrong? It hasn’t been the worst Monday of my life, but today has been one of those days. I have so much on my plate from day to day and I have a list of things so long that I am kind of freaking out. When I begin to freak out, I need a mellow, relaxing album to listen to and lately, that album has been Horse Feathers “House With No Name”. This track, is the first song on the album and it really sets the tone of an amazing, beautiful record. Without comparing them to anyone in particular, this album doesn’t seem out of place on Kill Rock Stars if you consider their back catalog of Elliott Smith, Jeff Hanson, and the Decemberists.

I hope your Monday has been much better, but if it hasn’t for whatever reason, please listen to this song and check out this album. If I am in the right mood, this is the album I go to.

WORST Song Of The Day

BEST Songs of the day
Today’s installment of “Song of the Day” is brought to you by yours truly, Virgil Dickerson. I am feeling a little surly today and decided to feature a Worst song of the day. I know I know, that isn’t very posi, but sometimes, you have to talk a little shit. I actually used to be a fan of Antony and the Johnsons and was really excited to hear this EP, Another World. I was listening to it and when this song came on, Andy had to retreat to the kitchen to laugh in an attempt to not hurt my feelings. At the same time he was laughing in the kitchen, I was thinking outloud, “What the Fuck”. I am all for people doing different things and am always excited to hear new music, but this song is absolutely horrible. It isn’t the worst song I ever heard, but it is pretty close. With lyrics like, “That Pig Made Me Feel So Bad”, I would really like to know what the inspiration was for this song. I just have to wonder how this record and this artist is so critically acclaimed. Am I off-based? Please listen to this song and let me know what you think. Because of this song, I can no longer listen to anything Antony has recorded, even the songs I once liked. When our front office is in a weird funk, I tend to play this song to get everyone re-focused. Sure, I get lots of flack everytime I play it, but after the song has played, we can regroup and get everyone working together again. So the song does have that going for it. Sorry if this offends anyone, but I just had to talk a little shit. Let me know your thoughts on this song and this artist. The release, “Another World” is available in the VC store, you can find it here. The song, “Shake That Devil” is the 3rd track off of “Another World”. You can download the song here. I decided to pick this Avail song for a few reasons. Yesterday, when Teenage Bottlerocket stopped by, Ray got super stoked when he saw that we had Avail vinyl and picked up a copy of “4 AM Friday”. When we got dinner, we were talking about Avail and about all of these earlier albums. I guess Fat Mike when talking to Teenage Bottlerocket said that he wanted to hear their demos of their new songs because he felt like he had put out the worst albums by Avail, Against Me, and a third band I can’t remember when those bands put out their first albums for Fat. I like those Avail Fat albums, but to me the best material is on 4Am Friday and Over the James. I was also thinking about picking an Avail song since Tim Barry will be playing tonight and it is always a treat when he plays an Avail song in his set. Maybe it will happen tonight.

Words cannot even begin to describe the influence that Avail has had on the musical landscape. A bunch of punk rockers from Richmond melded Punk Rock and Hardcore opening my eyes to heavier music. To this day, Avail put on one of the most intense sets I had ever seen and as much as I love seeing Tim Barry perform live (he is amazing), I miss not seeing Avail regularly.

The album, “4 AM Friday” is available in the VC store (as are other Avail albums), you can find it here.

Friends, today, i am turning back the clocks to 1996 and rocking out with one of my favorite bands from that year, Digger. This Pennsylvania pop-punk outfit came out swinging for the fences with this debut and I wore out the compact disc. Their live show was just so much fun and this was back when they had Phil who was such an energetic co-frontman. I really miss these guys and while thinking of a song for this fine Monday afternoon, my head conjured, “I Want My Hat Back”. This song is a pretty goofy anthem about getting your hat back but at the time, it was my jam. Listening to the album in 2009, it still holds up. I miss these guys. To me though, Powerbait was their best album and as much as I liked their later records, I always compared them to this record. if anyone talk to Chris Benner from Digger, tell them I say hi.

I think I am waxing nostalgic since I am gonna see the Nobodys tonight who were labelmates of Digger.

It should go without saying that we endorse all of our releases, why else would we release it? So don’t blame us for occasionally picking one of our own releases as the song of the day. I am excited that Punknews is hosting an exclusive download of In the Red’s “Jetbreaker”. Maybe it is because of the song title, but this new album really opened my eyes to the inspiration Mike Hale receives from Jawbreaker. This song gives you a pretty good example of what to expect from In the Red’s latest album. Every time I listen to this album, I just get pumped that we released it. “Volume 2″ is my favorite rock record of 2009 and I really hope that others are excited about it, too. The official street date isn’t until March 31st, but I know many of you have already received the record. If you haven’t picked it up yet, listen to this song, and get ready for a full album stream on Punknews when the album is released.

I was on the phone yesterday with Eddie from Side One Dummy and we were talking about everything under the sun and somehow the Loved Ones came up. We were talking about how great they were and then we discussed our favorite album by them which happened to be the same album, “Keep Your Heart”. For me, I was already hip to the Loved Ones when this album came out. I had been sent a ton of promos by Lumberjack of their first EP on Jade Tree and enjoyed it quite a bit. I then received a promo of this album and seriously had it on repeat for ever. I likened them to a punk rock Gin Blossoms as I thought that their songwriting was a notch above their contemporaries. The songs are just so good. I am glad that the band is getting the recognition they rightfully deserve with “Build and Burn” and their latest EP, “Distractions”, but for me, it all starts with “Keep Your Heart”. If you don’t own this record, listen to this song and re-evaluate your record collection’s absence of this record.

I shouldn’t say anything here for fear of jinxing it, but it looks as though, we will be putting out a Loved Ones/Cheap Girls Under the Influence 7″ in the not so distant future. How incredible is that? Don’t go posting this to Punknews as nothing is set in stone, but it could happen.

The Riverboat Gamblers are one of those bands that I always felt like I should be giving a listen to, but for whatever reason never got around to listening to. They toured with lots of bands that I love (Against Me, the Bronx, Eagles of Death Metal) yet I had never seen them play. My good buddy Zach was always singing their praises and the other day, we were at his house brewing beer and he started playing some of their music. I really liked what I heard and took that experience as the final nudge to start listening to their music. Today, I played them for Ralph and asked if he had ever heard them; he said no. As their music was playing, his ears perked up because he thought they were a Country band, not the ripping rock band that they are. There are now 2 new fans at Vinyl Collective so I figured there might be more of you who are yet to lend an ear to the Gamblers.

They have a brand new album, “Underneath The Owl” for pre-order in the VC store, you can find it here.

The song, “A Choppy Yet Sincere Apology” is the 2nd track off of “Underneath The Owl”. You can download the song here after you sign up to the Riverboat Gamblers’ mailing list.
