An Interview With Suburban Home Records’ Virgil Dickerson [Small Doggies]

An Interview With Suburban Home Records’ Virgil Dickerson [Small Doggies]

A very good friend of mine, Matt Ferner, recently did an in depth interview with yours truly about the label, punk rock (in Colorado), the future of the label, how things have changed over the past 15 years, my favorite all time albums and favorite all time punk albums, and a whole lot more. This is definitely the most in depth interview I have ever participated in. If you have ever been interested about any aspect of me starting Suburban Home and Vinyl Collective, this is as close to a source as anything out there.

A few things to point out. The photo was taken by UC Advocate Photographer, Rachel Hirschey. It was her beat up records and her idea for me to hold them the way that they are being held. I told her I that I was certain I would get some shit for handling the records. Another thing, while flattering, I think Matt thinks much more highly of Suburban Home’s involvement with Colorado punk rock than actually happened. It is always an honor to be interviewed and I really enjoyed answering all of Matt’s questions. Thanks Matt!

Rocket Fuel Episode #42: The Gamits Interview and Contest

Rocketfuel Episode #42: The Gamits Interview and Contest

Our friends at Rocket Fuel just posted episode #42 (that is a lot of work and is quite the accomplishment). Episode #42 features an interview with the Gamits as well as playing a couple of cuts from “Parts”, the Gamits’ new album. If you haven’t listened to this podcast before, no only does Jeff do a great job with his interviews, he always plays a great mix of tracks. This episode’s playlist features:

Superchunk “Learned To Surf”
The Thermals “I Don’t Believe You”
Carpenter “Mean Things”
Helmet “Seeing Eye Dog”
Why I Hate “Feathered Hair & Pegged Chords”
The Gamits “The Still & The Lost”
Kadets “Sayonara”
Little League “Hope Go Round”
Samiam “Bad Day (Live)”
Young Tom Fury “Mixtape Medicine”
The Gamits “I’m Not Going Back”
Second Time Lucky “Relentless”
Alexander Hudjohn “The Rolling Stones Were Right”

Not too shabby if you ask me. Please check out the podcast and while you do, consider subscribing to future editions. Rocket Fuel never disappoints. Thanks Jeff.

If you haven’t pre-ordered, the Gamits’ “Parts”, I highly recommend you do. We only have a handful of copies on vinyl left and we have the album available on CD, too. Just visit our store.

Free Download of Two Cow Garage: "Sally I've Been Shot" [Punknews]

Free Download of Two Cow Garage: “Sally I’ve Been Shot” [Punknews]

Last week, our friends at Punknews.org debuted the Two Cow Garage track, “Sally I’ve Been Shot”. The song starts off Two Cow’s brand new album, “Sweet Saint Me” and I can’t think a more rocking way to start the album. This week, Punknews.org have been so kind as to offer a free download of the track. I encourage everyone to download the track and get a better idea of what to expect when “Sweet Saint Me” is released on Tuesday, October 26th.

Two Cow Garage will be celebrating the release of their brand new album this Saturday, September 25th in Columbus at the Rumba Cafe. They will take a few days off after this celebration and will start a tour that will cover most of the United States. To see Two Cow Garage and the rest of the Suburban Home family’s tour dates, visit this link.

Thanks to everyone who has reached out or put in a good word about press/radio for Two Cow Garage. The response has been incredible. I believe in this band so much and it feels really great to know that others feel the same way. We’ve already started receiving some really great press. Here are just a couple:

PO: Two Cow Garage "Sweet Saint Me" silk-screened poster

Two Cow Garage “Sweet Saint Me” silk-screened poster

Part of a small run of silk-screened posters designed by Alan Peters (Jupiter Visual). The press run was split evenly between the blue and yellow posters. Due to a cutting mistake on the first run, I will be getting more then the 20 I thought I was getting yesterday. Either case, these won’t last long and will make a nice piece of memorabilia for one of the best records of 2010.

The price includes a poster tube, there is no way we are shipping these without a poster tube.

Murder by Death / Sam Lowry split 7″

I just picked up a well packaged box from Bloomington, Indiana, sent by Adam from Murder by Death. The box contains what you see above: Murder by Death / Sam Lowry split 7″s and Murder by Death’s 10 year DVD. I am sold out of the DVDs, but if you want one of the split 7″s, I only have like 10 left. Both the DVD and the 7″ are available from the band’s webstore or from them directly while on tour. I do expect both to sell out sooner than later so make sure you get one sooner than later. Especially with the 7″s, they are all pretty much out of print in the series so far.

If you pre-ordered this from me and there are no other pre-orders in the same order, your order will ship today. Thanks for your order.

Vinyl Collector of the Day, Anthony Elliott

Today, I bring you our Vinyl Collector of the Day, Anthony Elliott. Anthony proudly claims to have been born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana (hope to both Murder by Death and Austin Lucas). Anthony answered our questions about why he collects vinyl, his first vinyl purchase, records he would like to see pressed, his thoughts on colored vinyl, recent purchases, and more. While answering why he collects vinyl, he mentions the analogy of vinyl vs mp3 as wanting to own the silk-screened poster as opposed to a picture of it on your computer. I have always liked that analogy. Thanks Anthony for taking the time to answer our questions.

You, too, can answer our questions and submit your Vinyl Collector of the Day feature. What are you waiting for? You can find the questions here.

Two Cow Garage "Sweet Saint Me" album release show Saturday / Silk-screened Posters

Tow Cow Garage are celebrating the release of their brand new album, “Sweet Saint Me” on Saturday, September 25th at the Rumba Cafe. Man, I really wish my transporter was in proper working order as I would love to beam myself to Columbus to celebrate with the guys. If you are anywhere near this show, you better make it out to the show.

If you do go to the show, you will see that the guys will have Compact Discs and Silk-screened Posters (vinyl won’t be done for a little while). The Posters are limited to 100 (50 yellow, 50 blue). My buddy Alan at Jupiter Visual designed and printed them. They look really great. If they don’t sell out of them at their album release show, they will have some with them on the road.

I will have 10 of each color for sale in my store tomorrow. Understand that the photos you see above are before they were cut. I expect them to sell out pretty quickly, FYI.

PO: The Sainte Catherines "Fire Works" LP/Deluxe Set/Hockey Puck

The Sainte Catherines “Fire Works” LP/Deluxe Set/CD/Hockey Puck

Our good friend Neil at Anchorless just announced the pre-order for The Sainte Catherines, “Fire Works”. If for some reason, you don’t know this band, you should. The members also moonlight in Yesterday’s Ring, who put out their last album on Suburban Home. But the Sainte Catherines are releasing what sounds like a really great record, and their first since being on Fat Wreck. Below is a description by Anchorless that should paint a better picture. Know that the Red vinyl (out of 100) and the Green vinyl (out of 200) will sell out quickly. I bought the Red and the Hockey Puck because how cool is it that they are releasing a Hockey Puck?

From Anchorless:
Woah. Have you ever been to Montreal? Last time I was there I saw a guy in a frog costume dancing and juggling flaming sticks while a midget clown played a tiny accordion for loonies. That’s a TRUE STORY, folks! It’s a real scene. The part of the world that’s a little bit Canada, a little bit France that hates Canada and is ignored by France is probably the strangest place in the northern hemisphere (except for maybe that church in the Czech Republic that’s full of skulls, but hey, I digress…)

Fire Works takes its cues from the band’s early influences like American Steel, the Broadways, Jawbreaker and Fifteen, and strains it through a sieve of 70′s rock, like a French Canadian wine that will kick your dick off, get you drunk, eat all your poutine and find you hung over in the morning humming the most melodic and positive tunes of the bands storied career. Did I mention that these dudes fought a whole city with Against Me!? Well, I don’t like to name drop, so take my word for it or ask them all about it when they come through your town.

Chunklet's Kickstarter Campaign – The Indie Cred Test (Get a Fucked Up 7")

Kickstarter: The Indie Cred Test Presented by Chunklet Magazine

While I know many of you have mixed feelings about Kickstarter, I think that in certain instances, it is really great way to fund your project. Take for example, the Indie Cred Test, a book in development by the folks at Chunklet. They have produced a rather hilarious video explaining their need for funds to publish The Indie Cred Test. Even if you don’t end up funding the project, you have to watch the video. It made me laugh more than a few times.

So the publishers who typically work with Chunklet didn’t seem to want to publish this latest book so the crew at Chunklet decided to publish it themselves and have asked for anyone interested to help fund the project.

Not only does the book sound interesting and it is being published by people who have a great sense of humor, certain pledge thresholds come with a 7″ by Fucked Up. I’m told that the only way to get this 7″ is through this Kickstarter campaign.

Check out the embedded video or just skip to the kickstarter page to see the video and if you are feeling like supporting their project, fund it. With 21 days to go, they are over half way funded. It doesn’t hurt that the video is shot in front of a wall of records!
