Release a split 7″ with Frank Turner, Who Would you Submit?

All of you singer-songwriters out there looking for a great, exciting opportunity, read on. Frank Turner, who we at Vinyl Collective/Suburban Home are all big fans of, just announced on his blog a really great idea to expose a few singer/song-writers. Read the following:

“Come on folks and try this at home“. It started as a playful dig at the Billy Bragg album title, then morphed into a song and a slogan. I’ve always been one for putting my art where my mouth is, so when the idea of releasing the song on 7″ Vinyl came up, I had an idea.

Why not make it a split release, but not with some well-established rock ‘n’ roll buddy of mine, but with someone new, someone fresh and hungry, someone I didn’t know about. Someone like you, sat in a bedroom, pouring out your songs with the passion its easy to lose sight of after a time.

So here it is: I want you to send me songs. I’m going to listen to them all, and then we’re going to choose two winners, with the help of the good folk at Kerrang! (UK) and Alternative Press (USA) – though rest assured the final decision is mine. The record will be released with both winning tracks on the B-Side of a coloured vinyl – 1000 copies each for the UK and the rest of the world. The single will be released on August 2nd.

That’s the basic outline. There are some more specific terms and conditions, which you should have a read of if you want to submit a song for the competition:

People from the UK should read this
People from the rest of the world should read this

Songs can be submitted from now through until May 31st.

UK people can upload songs on the Xtra Mile website.
Ex-UK people can upload through the Epitaph website.

I’m looking forward to listening through to everything. Happy uploading!

I am gonna bug our own Andy Thomas to submit a track. Not only is Andy a big fan of Frank Turner, but it would be great to see him get a break like this. Who do you think should submit a track for these split 7″s? Man, I love this idea.

I would submit “Russell & The Wolf Choir” from the UK. He is an amazing singer/songwriter that really conveys the passion of his lyrics through his vocal delivery that is softly backed by an acoustic guitar. I could imagine fans of a ton of bands on this site would love R&TWC.

Caleb Pepp from 1997. They aren’t really around anymore and he was the best part of the band. http://www.myspace.com/nineteenninetyseven . His style would also go well with Frank Turner.
