Review: Into It. Over It – Proper LP

Into It. Over It – Proper LP – Damiera bassist Evan Weiss – who rather than perform under his own name has opted to name his one-man act Into It. Over It. – opted to not release a normal debut, but instead write, record and release one song every week for an entire year, compiling them all later in a release aptly titled 52 Weeks.

It was gimmicky, for sure, designed to gain the new indie rocker some attention through non-traditional means. In that capacity, it worked well. But as with his follow up – the aptly titled full-length, Proper, indicating his first proper release of 12 songs in the form of a conventional album – the problems lie not in the concept or even the technical proficiency and smooth performance of Weiss, but in a lack of any true standout tracks.

Proper finds Weiss penning and performing tunes simply around the theme of life. What it amounts to though is a series of overly wordy lyrics set to tunes that blend together one to the next. It’s safe to say that there’s nothing in particular I hate about Proper, but nothing that really grabs my attention with the album, which means its hard to justify the time spent on Into It. Over It.’s latest 12 songs.

The cover of the LP features an arrestingly striking yet altogether un-engaging grayscale close-up of a door handle and lock. Ryan Russell’s photography on the inside foldout lyrics sheet does little to add to the formula, serving simply as a collection of strange images rather than a cohesive design. When combined with the lackluster blue-gray vinyl pressing, it makes for an overall boring package that does little to catch the eye. And when all is said and done, I’m still just not sold on this side project turned gimmick turned full-fledged indie rock act.
